sports photography what is the best camera and setup
I was wondering i am looking to buy a dslr and am tossed between the d70 the 20d and the minolta maxxum7d. What i shoot is sports of my kids ,basketball, football, softball, etc and need a camera and setup that will be able to catch the action and deliver me good printable 8x10- 11x14's... I was confused as to what would be the best direction to go. Faster lenes, image stabilization, or higher iso speeds or a combination to get the best printable results. I am on a tight budget but want to get the most bang for my buck so to speak and am tired of grainy pictures with my point and shoot camera and its slow. So i was trying to figure this all out like for example will a 70-200mm 3.5-5.6 lens at iso 800 deliver as good a print as say a faster lens 70-200mm 2.8 at iso 400, or would an image stabilized len's or camera as in the maxxum, deliver better printable results. at the same iso . Once ou get past iso 400 how much qaulity is lost. Because the 20d goes up to 3200... so what would be the best way to go? Also if say you use a high speed lens and a 2 x multiplier or extender how many f stops do you loose? I have a 1.7 50mm with my 2x mulitplier is a fairly nice zoom on my 35mm..Also with my olmpus 750 uz it seems that the iso setting arent = to the 35mm iso settings what i mean is outside in bright daylight with snow i would use 100 on 35mm when using the same in digital the pictures wash out if i go to 50 they are ok.... Anyhow i wanted to find this all out so i know what to buy... Is there any good websites or books that talk about this stuff? for sports needs.. Thank you Bill B

I would not hesitate to recommend the Canon 20D, the lack of noise at high ISO´s is amazing, and if you use Neat Image etc., you can get some stunning results. The 5 frames per second is also fantastic for sports shots, you cant go wrong. If you use a 1.4x converter you lose 1 stop, and you lose 2 stops for a 2x converter...get the 20D!
All the best,

Just curious as to what one thinks about the new Rebel XT by Canon for sports photography?

XT is a nice update to the 300D but still not a patch on the 20D, in my opinion. Only 3 FPS, slightly different sensor and buffer of just 14 shots. Oh, and a plastic body.
Still rate the 20D much higher for sports!

I have the Rebel (300d) and absolutley love it for sports (as well as other stuff). The price difference is what detered me from the 20d but I'm sure it's an awesome camera since it's a step up from the Rebel.
