Can't open RAW files in Photoshop Elements
Ok, so I just got a Nikon 8800 and wanted to try out RAW formatted images for the first time, but when I try to open them in Photoshop Elements I get a "RAW Adjustments" dialog (in which the thumbnail is blank, hmm), I then click OK and get "Could not open <filename> because of disk error." Any idea what's causing this?
I've downloaded Camera RAW plugin version 2.3 and have "Nikon NEF Plugin LE.8bi" in the same directory (though I'm not sure where it came from). Is it just that v2.3 doesn't support the 8800? it's not listed in the supported cameras list.
Thanks, Alex

Nikon 8800 RAW files problem
I wish I were responding with a solution, but I have been trying to find out the same thing, and I'm getting nowhere. Instead let me add a little bit to your information. I had a Nikon COOLPIX 8700, and once I installed the Nikon View software that came with it Photoshop 7.0 could read it. So could Nikon View and Nikon Edit. Now I have sold the 8700 and bought the 8800, and I find that the NEF (Nikon RAW) files can't be read by any of them. They are good in-camera, but the image can't be opened by Nikon Edit or Photoshop. Nikon View displays them, but only to a magnification of about 4, and then it shuts down. It doesn't allow saving the images. Nikon Edit says the failure is due to a "disk" error, but I've tried flash cards with 8700 NEF files on them (which work) as well as new flash cards, and nothing works for the 8800 files. I've also upgraded the 8800's firmware from v1.3 to v1.4. I hope this information helps anyone who might be answering photoHab's question. Thank you for whatever information you might have.

Re: Nikon 8800 RAW files problem
Hello, I had the same problem with my Coolpix 8800 after installing PictureProject 1.0 that came with the camera. The problem suddenly went away after installing PictureProject 1.5, so I think version 1.0 installs an old plug-in in Photoshop (which doesn't support the 8800 RAW files) and the 1.5 version installs a new and correct plug-in.

I've been there!
I like you were very anxious to try a raw photo with my 8800. I found the software that came with the camera a joke after being used to photoshop CS I couldn't open a raw photo no matter what I was emailed a plugin and thought it was great. But only to find out later that it was only a partial of the program. Then my eyes were opened after upgrading to photoshop CS2. A spendy program but it rocks. I shoot 98% raw photos now knowing I can adjust the lighting with out effecting the color. Its too bad Nikon did this to us, they had to be different and make us pay the Bucks to get the best results. Don't get me wrong I love my 8800 but I think they could have made it more compatable with software out there. The only other complaint was the filters ..... they are either back ordered or don't exist. I finally bought the addaptor to 58mm and with Tiffen filter kit. .... I could have been easier nikon.

Need PSE3
I believe you must have Photoshop Elements 3 in order to open and edit RAW file. That's what I use and it works great.

nikon raw images are encoded with nikon proprietery encryption and can only be used with the nikon software. adobe will not support it as they fear legal action, there are some plugins around to make it work with other software( do not know where) nikon scrood us!!

Raw Nikon with PE3
As I mentioned in my previous post, I open and edit NIKON RAW (NEF) images with Photoshop Elements 3 all the time. I only shoot in RAW with my Nikon D70. I don't even have Nikon Capture on my computer.
