photos npt in order

I have an Olympus C750 and am experimenting with various editing progs I have acquired- the basic Canedia Master 4, that came with the camera: Arcsoft Photostudio 2000 that was with a scanner bought before getting the camera, and Ulead PhotoImpact 6.

My problem doesn't directly apply to any of them but seems to occur without any logic that I can see. IT is that the photos bear a file name consisting of a file name with date and serail number, either the original in form P month dayserial (e.g.28 Feb # 23 would be 2280023) or in the case of recovered files lost on accidental reformat (28-02-04-23). Although I have requested they be listed in date and time taken sequence they do not always appear in that order in their listing so you will have # 1 to 23 in order than jumps to say #34 to 45 with the missing #24 to 33 appearing later in the list. can anyone tell me why this happens and if when I burn to cd for slide shows the original proper sequence will be reinstated? Is there a workround to this problem. The files btw retain their EXIf info throughout
