That's a great transformation. Lovely b/w skin tones. I just love monochrome. How do you convert colour to b/w? My prefered method is making a new adjustment layer and using channel mixer.

I don't how Paul does it...he's away at the moment.
Personnally I convert to LAB Colour, then choose "Lightness" in the "Channel layers",
then I do all the ajustments necessary, levels, curves, contrast etc. After that I convert to "Grayscale" you will see in the "Channels" that it leaves one layer. Following all that I then reconvert it back to "RGB".

It's a bit long but LAB has a more dynamique range of tones to work with.

BTW Can I ask what part of the UK you're from ? Sherwood Forest...a friend of Robin Hood ?

I have used that method too in the past. For creative effects converting one of the colour to greyscale then back to RGB is occassionaly useful.

For those who want to try colour to b/w do not go image>mode>greyscale, the results are normally dire.

lol @ RVB not Sherwood. Here's a clue, i'll be photographing St. Paul's Carnival tomorrow ;)

St Paul's carnival is a large community festival of African and Afro-Caribbean culture in Bristol. It's similar to the Notting Hill carnival in London. A great day out with many photo opportunities.

I've not heard about the Bristol one, but I have heard and seen (TV) of the Notting Hill. Some great shots to be taken. You'll need to share some here.

Is the Bristol carnival a recently created event ? I mean in the last 15 years or so.
That's how long I've been out of the UK so I've lost track a bit...

This year is the 36th carnival. It has got so big that the organisers decided to cancel last years festival to rethink how to organise it. 15 years ago it was quite small though, only residents of Bristol and fans of Afro-Caribbean music and culture would know about it. I'll be armed with my EOS 10 and a ton of Fuji Velvia. I'll put some pix up (if there are any decent ones) in 10 days or so. Off to house sit a 300yo cottage in Cheddar Gorge from Sunday. So damn tough at the top lol ;)

Little John
This was converted using the channel mixer and then I used a combination of tools in PS7 to remove the background and soften the image …..
