Well there are alot of great cameras out on the market, but I would recommending listing a few things to aid use out on helping you find a camera...
-How big will you normally print (4x6, 8x10, never, so on)
-Do you need manual controls (you stated something for the future, but does that mean your needing manual)
-Will you be doing any post processing or will you most use the images straight off the camera?
-After vaction, what do you think you will be using it for (kids at soccer games, indoors, family stuff, birds, closeups, so on)
-You said slim, are you looking for a SUPER SMALL camera or just something smaller. Many cameras are small, but not pocketable.
-Do you have a price range
I see you commented on the camera being outdated. Mostly I would find a camera that fits YOUR needs more than anything. There will be new cameras comeing out as we speak, but you need to focus more on what you need, and what fits YOUR needs. New does not mean its going to be better if you never use those features.
Also the biggest thing I can recommend is DONT get confussed and lost in the Megapixel war. Many companies are playing the number game now.
