Hi Andy
Don't know what sort of bug it is but it's a great shot. Perhaps a little soft towards the head so maybe a slightly larger depth of field and a little sharpening would have helped but still a real nice capture, well done..

thanks matt.
I must admit, I agree with your critique, but its still early days with the camera. It can only get better from here!
I've been told that it maybe a leaf hopper??? not sure on that one though!

Don't let it BUG you
Not being an entomologist or knowing exactly where you found it I can't tell you much. What I can tell you is that it isn't a leafhopper.
It is in fact some variety of Leaf Beetle, family Chrysomelidae, order Coleoptera. of which there are over 25,000 species. This is a colorful one.
As for a photo critique Matt has it covered.

first off...nice shots....the head is definetely out of the DOF but the little dents and such on the back are just amazing! stop down the arperture and get the whole bug in focus, and you got yourself a great shot....also, if possible (i've taken pictures of ants and mosquitos and it's easier said than done ) try to get him headfirst, lol
keep shooting!
Vito

Thanks guys!
I appreciate the comments. As you said, the F stop needs to be stepped down (When I took this I didn't know what F stop was or what it did!!!!)
Next time I see him, I'll ask him to stay still a little longer so I can experiment a little more.
As for the angle, I'm not sure I agree with you on this one but thats ok, next time I'll do both and see what happens! I just felt the back was more interesting than the front.
At least I'm a little closer to finding out what it is!

do you think you could tell him to take a trip to new jersey too?
i'm sorry....the angle i was talking about, i just realized...if you get him headon you won't be able to see the detail in the back...

Nice shot... the colours are amazing on this bug, but as already said the DOF is a bit short.
Look forward to seeing more....

Nice shot. Agree with other posters about aperture etc. I'd like to know what it is too as we get them here in England and I've wondered what they are.
Regards,
Geoff.
