Competition?
I've been posting here for a couple of months or so. I do enter the POTW. I try to look at all of the entries. What is striking me is the wonderful diversity of photographs. The usual POTW winners are a fairly small gene pool. It's a competition and, despite protestations, I think winning matter to a lot of folks.
I'd like to see a "Gallery Week" segment here. Wherepeople just post the photograph they took that week. Comments, suggestions welcome but with take a closer look at the subject.
I am so tired of sunsets. Some superb, amazing and breathtaking but there is more to being a photographer than obvious beauty.

Yeah.... I understand you. One of my friends goes as far as taking pictures of dead flowers. I don't particularly like it, but sunset pictures almost every week is kinda.... too much repetition. I hope someone comes with something completely innovative and creative. That would be good...

I tend to agree, Northbeach, great variety and a lot of talent here.
One way of making it more 'even' is to have a more than just the one catagory for the winning entries.....I find it hard to judge a landscape against a portrait or macro or animal shot. This would give more the opportunity of winning and may encourage others to comment on and rate the work they view.
Just a thought??

I think that's a good idea, Andy.
I hope the administration folks will give it some thought.

One solution might be to place some more emphasis on the photo assignments, or something along those lines. I think it would force people to go out and try and take some different types of pictures and try out new things (get rid of that occasional boredom one finds now and then). I realize that the present method is intended to be a non-competitive forum and that some people probably avoid the POTW all together, but this is just an idea or another point for discussion. It would probably narrow the types of pictures and make things a little more relative. I agree with you all in that it is tough to rate a picture of a lion against a picture of a sunset. One other thing I find is that there are so many pictures each week it is a stretch to try and comment on even half of them. This week alone a third of the pictures have no comments and a half have 1 or less. Giving a theme to the "competition" would most likely reduce the number of entrants and might lead to better rating/critiques. My 2 cents... .
