Photo Critique's
Can you take the heat
There are some people who post and wish to work on their photography, others just want a forum to share their images and hear nice words on their new baby pictures or whatever.
I will no longer be giving a detailed opinion on what I think of pictures posted, I will just say something generic and give a score.
Those that wish to be judged more extensively I will try to look at yours first each week and try to go through your gallery as best I can. Please note that although I am not a working professional I have sold some work, I went to Art school for Design and studied photography, I worked as an advertising editor/artist and I have shot everything from pinhole (don't laugh, look up some pinhole websites. some are awesome) to Large format. Film and digital and have been doing so for 25 years now.
I firmly believe that first one must understand that Photography is Art, which is Subjective. What one man hangs on the wall another won't look at twice. So don't get discouraged by what I or anyone else says about your work and don't think someones opinion is wrong, it's just not yours.
And second I will be spouting all kinds of photography rules in my critiques but don't succumb to the rules instead use them as a guide. I think many of the best photos taken have broken many of those same rules.
I also think there will be times where it will be easier to pull an image off the web, reprocess it and show the person I will post these edited version on a private page temporarily. let me know if you don't want me to do that with your photo's
Should you wish to be so judged just reply to this post.

Critique
Hello!
I would be quite interested in a critique of any work I post if you would be so kind. I am a beginning photographer (hobbyist) at 70 years young and live near you in Camarillo, Ca.
There is something to be learned from the opinions of others, especially if they have at least a modicum of experience in a particular subject, and are willing to give a true appraisal according to their own views. Nice plaudits are very re-assuring, but if they are empty ones, certainly they are not helpful.
Thank you,
Barba

Photo Critiques
Hi!
I would even appreciate a more in depth comment on the photo of mine where you posted the original message..."Flyin'" was the photo.
I had a problem in that I only took two shots on the table where those hats laid. I felt the bottom of the photo needed to be cropped to eliminate the edging of lawn that was in the photo. Would appreciate any further comment on that photo, if you have the time.
Thank you,
Barba

Critique away Dave
Feel free Dave. I can take it and I really appreciate the advice you've given me already. Posting pics showing editing and cropping etc is a very good idea. I've done similar things myself but you always wonder if the people mind or not. At least this way you are getting their permission in advance.
Thanks
Matt

Only replying by request... but I don't care either way. I don't pay attention to this site enough that it would make a difference to me. I'll probably quit posting altogether if I ever do win a POTW anyway... that's my goal... to win one week, then fade into oblivion

I would be more than happy to have your feedback on my photos. I have appreciated the comments you have already given me. I also like the option to rework someones photo - another site I am a member on has this feature and has a specific gallery set up for this exact purpose.

Well now!
It appears that this thread is working, Perhaps the gods of Bytephoto will create a area for the purpose of reprocessed photo's Tara, we'll see.
Something that I should mention to those who don't know my method of scoring. I don't give out high scores for good photo's as some here can attest. I have only given six 10's so far. I'm not saying that my method is best but it works for me.
One other thing I can appreciate a good frame and good photoshop work but if it becomes so complex that it diverts focus from the photo I will deduct for it.

Dave,
Having had a look at the comments and ratings you've given, I entirely agree with you on not giving high scores. IMO, high ratings must be kept for extremely outstanding shots and these are few and far between.
I'm also happy with your 'snapshot' comments as those shots, in my mind, don't belong in a POTW contest.
All members,
I would also like to emphasize that any member who posts in the POTW and does not accept good advice and critiques should reframe from entering the contest. It's as simple as that. There will be no new rules against critiques, they're here, and here to stay. It's the only way to learn.
Anyone who wishes 'help', and have their photo reprocessed to show improvements, upload the shot to your gallery, then post them in the Photo Sharing forum.

I have to admit that I don't know whether to bow in front of you, or just curtsy. I must say you've got chutzpah. If you can ever lower yourself off that lofty professional pedestal you're on to judge our humble work...(understanding that they first meet with your criteria for "photography" and we follow this link to beg you to bless us with your wisdom)...we would be oh, so honored.
Yes, I'm being a little sarcastic here. But, I doubt I'm the only one that would rather share a cup of coffee with a friend and a "friendly critic", than a teacher. And most mornings I do meet my friends here at bytephoto over a cup of java.
I'm not saying I can't take criticism, or that I don't want it. I just want to know who died and made you God?
Am I so far off my rocker here?????
