More Lens Talk...

Heres an unusual (I hope) anomaly.

I generally start my Zoo shoots with the Canon 100/400L IS USM lens on my 300D.

Eventually I get to an area or exhibit that can't use the big lens. I stop and swap the 100/400 for the all around Canon 28/135 IS.

Not every time, but often enough, the camera WILL NOT TURN ON !!

The first time it happened, I panicked. I swapped the lenses to the Kit lenses (18/55) and every thing worked fine.

I put the 28/135 back on and again, the camera refused to start up. Dirty contacts? No.

I then pulled both batteries out, then back in. The camera started right up and everything (including the lens) worked just fine.

This same thing happened again a few days ago.

I have had NO other malfunctions with this camera.

Anybody want to guess ??

I had a problem the other day with my 100/400 IS L. When I pressed the shutter down to the first step, the IS went nuts, then I had an F stop of 00. I turned it on and off twice with no avail. I removed the lense and replaced it with the camera off, and all has been fine since. My 85mm has given me errors, but that has always cleared up with an off/on routine. I hope these glitches are always easily fixed, as they have been in the past.

Re: More Lens Talk...

Can't guess what's causing it, but am sure glad everything is OK for you now. It's nice to know these things from other people's experiences though, in case it happens to you. Regards [F.R.]

Question Never heard of this ....

Setiprime.. Have you contacted canon to get -hopefully- a technical explanation or at elast an educated guess of what may have happened? If so, please let us know their answer.

I know Canon recomends always to change lenses with Camera off... but from your post I think you did turn the camera off.

I never had problems changing lenses on my 10D, but then I do not have L lenses... Not sure if that makes a difference (in getting the problem, difference in quality and $$... yes they do!)

Please keep us posted if you find out something from Canon

I had the same problem on many occasions with the 28-135 IS lens...exactly as you have.I also ran into the same problem many times with the 50mm 1.8 prime lens.My best guess is that the lens and camera are getting confused with the different f-stops?..My best guess anyways.

funny -- the exact same thing happened to me recently in DC at the end of a day in the Capitol. Camera was dead. Got back to the hotel, changed my shorts, put the battery from the primary slot (grip) in the charger, and put the second in the primary space and it turned on -- no problem. I was stumped but figured it must be something related to the lens and camera exchanging info as I had just changed lenses -- kit lens and the 50mm 1.8 -- which one first I don't recall. All is well now though.
