photoshop DPI

Have just bought the Pentax IST1 and think it's great but can any one tell me, when I open up a shot in Photoshop, the image is only 72dpi no matter how many mega-pixles the image is. I am used to scanning photographs at 300 dpi for magazine print work but resizing from 72 to 300 seems silly. Is it just me? Please help

You can change the DPI to 300 if you want in photoshop, but it will be meaningless. The image comes out of the camera as x pixels by y pixels and can be changed to dpi for printing purposes.

Just divide the x & y pixel count from your camera by the number of x & y inches that you want to print and that will be you effective dpi.

In photoshop when you are resizing make sure you are not resampling. When you un-tick this option you will only be able to change the dpi or the width and height. When you change the dpi to 300 the width and height will change accordingly to show you the finished size it will print.

If you resample and change the dpi you are effectively adding more pixels and the photo will be of a poorer quality.
