asking permission

I was just wondering if taking a picture of someone's house and property from a public area requires permission from the owner. I have no intention of selling the photo. Any information is welcome.

Nicole

I got chased off a property once by an old man and his dog. I was just shooting the lake and he didnt like it... So I would ask permission maybe it will avoid bad circumstances.

My suggestion is to ask around locally in your area, as the laws can differ quite a lot from country to country, and I presume in the States, they can differ from state to state too.

If you are on public property such as roadway or sidewalk or public right of way and are taking pictures of structures you should have no problem as that is public property that belongs to the citizens. Now if there are people in the shot you could have a problem and should ask.

The thing I hear most now is that if your out in public you should expect that your picture will be taken. Every time you go into a store now your on video, even in the parking lot, while you pump your gas, every time you use your ATM machine, when drive the 465 loop around Indianapolis and all the major intersections around Indy, when you go to school, or a sporting event your being watched, video taped and photographed.
