Another nice shot.....what camera are you using. Do you prefocus and then wait for the bird to come into the DOF range? Or is the camera really fast at focusing. I've found with my Nikon that I have to pre plan a shot like this.....Pre focus and then just wait for the bird.....or if the distance is enough then put the focus on infinity because anything after about 30ft is in focus.

I shoot with a Minolta Dimage 7Hi. I got lucky with this one. I used the auto focus and tracked the duck and the camerea got a lock. Ducks fly a lot slower so maybe that was why. The focus on my 7Hi isn't that fast but is faster than most pro-sumer cameras.
