    Sony DSC-H1 PROBLEM

This Sony camera has been the best one I've owned yet. Great pixs, lots of features.

"Until today!" It freezes up on me anytime I push the shutter button to try taking a photo. The Green AE lock spot just blinks and nothing happens. FREEZES up! To shut the camera off, I have to take the battery out. When I turn it back on, I can enter the menu, use the zoom etc, but the minute I push the shutter button down, it freezes up again, blinking green (dot) light.

Is there anything I can do? Or do I have to send this into Sony and not have a camera for the upcoming holidays

If you find you need to send the rig in for repairs. I'd only let SONY look at it. I'd never let some fly by the internet outfit evan have my adress let alone touch my camera. I'd also not let Bubba at the local camera shop touch it.

That is what I plan to do, send it to Sony.

Does anyone know the average turnaround for repairs? I'm hoping I get it back in time for the Christmas holidays.

Another problem I have is the warranty.
Sony says I have to have the receipt. Well, I got it from my folks for my birthday in September. Plus, they live 500 miles away and being old in their 80's, they forgot where they put the reciept .

Well, they refuse to fix without the receipt. I'm not about to ask my Dad for it as he is in the hospital.
I will send it in to be fixed, pay for it and then sell it and go back to NIKON.

What do people do that get these as gifts at Christmas? It is rude to go asking for receipts!

No Jack it is not "rude" asking for the reciept. I myself always put the reciept to any gift in the box the gift came in. Not doing so is like putting your head in the sand. Now to be upset with SONY is just wrong. It would be no different if the rig had been NIKON.

Where I grew up and was raised in Oregon, it is/was considered rude to ask "how much" for gifts!!!

That is besides the point. First my parents (who gave me the DSCH1 for my BD) are very old in their 80's and Dad's in the hospital with a heart condition and is no shape to even remember where the receipt is...

Then the sony has only been out for about four months now, so the warranty should be good no matter WHO has it.

And I sent in the warranty card too. That should be enough.

For the sake of aurgument. They have gift reciepts if giving original is not acceptible. But when buying a highline gift some sort of a receipt is a must. A leason learned. As for being in the hospital with a heart condition try to remeber to treat your father with respect. I to have a heart condition and have had open heart sugery. I have been a man for many years. I do not want to be treated like a child by my children because something is not running on all four. Don't baby your father, love him and let him know it. As for the camera handle it any way you like. I was just trying to help.

PS: don't ask the question if you don't want the answer. See below.

    Yup, lesson learned.

I will sell the Sony when I get it back and go back to either Nikon or Olympus as I have had those since 1996 and not ONE ever broke down, especially during the holiday.
I'm VERY picky about my stuff and baby them. This quit for no good reason.
No more Sonys for me. Cameras anyway.

I'm NOT going to bother my Dad while he is in the hospital.

A shame you feel that way about Sony -- but I guess understandable if it's the only camera brand that ever broke on you --- guess I would feel the same in that situation, but I'm on my second Sony digicam now (W17 and now a V3) and they both work faultlessly. Same thing happens to Nikons and Canons every once in a while --- just Sony's bad luck it happened to you this time round -- they lost a customer. Look on any forum though and I'll guarantee you'll find someone who's never going to buy another canon or nikon or whatever ...... I must have been lucky, been buying cameras since 1970 and can't remember one of them letting me down (incidentally, none of them were Canon or Nikon -- I've never owned either brand, but that was a decision forced on me by financial constraints, not by choice, in the early years when Canon/Nikon were building only 'pro' cameras).

1- Does it have audio with video shot (not picture shot) ?

2- Does it cpture a photo from long distance ?

    sony dcs-h1 lock-up problem

Same problem as yours. I.E. if the green ready light is flashing due to not in focus or locked in and you click the shutter the camera freezes and all functions are disabled.
If you power down the camera, the lcd has a faint glow indicating that there is still some power going to the lcd display. Camera will not power up.
The only was to restore the camera is to remove the batteries and reinsert to reset camera. I sent the camera back to Sony for repair...turn around under warranty was 4 weeks. Camera came back with note replaced the lens, cleaned and checked.Problem is still there and somewhat worse not.Suspect firmware problem but I still have to rereport the camera problem again.
Anyone having similiar problems or a resolution would be appreciated.
