need help downloading pics from F707

I was just given a F707 without software or documentation. I have since gotten docs for it and have taken several pictures with it. However, when I try to download the pictures I have not been successful. According to Sony, I don't need a driver because my PC, XP operating system, has the required USB driver to download. Sony says I should see a removable drive that has a folder that contains the pictures but my PC does not recognize the camera at all. Any suggestions as to what I'm doing wrong. I've never had this problem with other digital camera but those had software, etc when I bought them.
When I connect the camera to the PC the USB Normal light turns to white, which I think is correct.
I'm probably doing something really dumb but so far I can't see what it is.

Only thing I can think of is set up PTP instead of NORMAL USB mode.
