Step UP or DOWN Ring??? (For Olympus TCON-17 Teleconverter & Sony F717)

Hi I read a post on this forum that claimed that the Olympus TCON-17 Teleconverter works with the Sony F717 camera... I made the purchase and discovered that the lense wont fit... it seems smaller...

The F717's diameter is 58mm i believe
The TCON-17's diameter is 55mm

My question is... Do i buy a Step down or a Step Up ring?

I am confused!

You are correct on the size. You will need a 58mm to 55mm STEP DOWN ring.

They are usually cheap, but some online places charge a arm and leg for shipping. I may recommend calling your local camera store, since its a common thing.

Unfortunately I was unable to find a step-down right for those sizes here locally. I ordered one from BHphoto, it is a kenko and is about $10 with shipping.

But after reading your post about TCON-17 working with F717 - you have overall saved me about a $100 since I was originally thinking about getting a Sony Telephoto lens here locally.

Btw, what other accessories do you recommend for this specific camera? (F717). Is an external flash worth a while?

The 717 us a great camera, but with anything, there are goodies that will aid your useage with it.

I find a tele extendeder to be my number one uses add on, but thats my preferance.

The 717 is a great closeup camera, but with a 50mm SLR reversed, the camera is truly amazing. You can count the hairs on the back of a fly at that point. But some people may never need that add on.

A external flash will make great for indoor work, but again some people prefer to use the bright sony lens. I find it to be a good add on.

Wide angle converter. This is something I rarely use, but when I do use it I am glad I have one. I actually need to pick another one up myself.

As well a good polirizer, ND filter, graduated ND filter, and so on.

Alot of goodies that will aid your photography, but more or less you have to find what fits your needs.

another question i have for you regarding the F717 + TCON-17 is what "setup" setting do i need to change in order to get the optimal results with this telephoto lens... I have noticed that the Hologram (Sp?) AF system that uses the red laser has trouble working obviously because of the lens so i have tuned it off in the setup menu... anything else that i should do?

That is the big thing. Dont forget you have just about doubled your zoom, so you will want to watch the shutter speed a little more.

I would not recommend opening your aperture all the way up, try to hang more near the sweet spot on your lens.

Also remeber you DOF is going to be much shallower, so take that into consideration when frameing.
