Assistance needed...

I have entered a number of photographic competitions to date and i'm getting pretty sick of not getting anywhere. I have placed two photographs so far into the Lumix competition (that made it to the gallery). I have an idea for a third image that I hope will at least get me onto the shortlist. I think that I can see a pattern in the way that the judges are choosing winners (abstract ’‚’‚…‚’‚¦…“man and machine’‚’‚…‚’‚‚� shots) and have adapted to that.


Here is an example of one of my previous attempts....
Traindriver image

I need a ’‚’‚…‚’‚¦…“different’‚’‚…‚’‚‚� look to get through to the final stages; for example, here is the link to one of the previous winners images How did this win image

I know that I have very little chance of winning anything, but just getting onto the shortlist would make me a very happy man! Could someone please give me some advice on how to capture this type of photograph (subject, lighting etc).

The traindriver image looks great. Great enough (if I was a judge) to put you on the short list.
Lookin' at the winner pages, I see what you mean. Your picture might be a bit to 'common' compared to other winning pictures.
Take the shot of the traindriver on different angles (if physically possible) even on more or less impossible angles and you may get the shot you need.

Cheers raaf. Your probably right mate, the image is a little bit an the normal side and needs something to give it an edge. A different angle would be good, but how about using it as a black and white image with maybe some scratches and dust on it? What do you think?

Go for a black and white Simon, I think it would reallt improve your chances as the colour pic as it stands is just lacking something and I always think that black & white is so much classier and interesting!

Looks a lot better to me too.
One thing I would have prefered to see would be a bit more of the train number (below the driver). I think it would add just that little touch of extra interest to the photo. Although that would mean to recompose the shot. Just my opinion, though.

Cheers guys. I think that the keeping of the trains number in the shot is a good idea. Should give it a bit of character.
