There used to be a monthly challenge (see link at top of page). It went by the wayside for a while because of the difficulty administering it. Looks like it tried to come back in June this year with an 'anything that floats' challenge. Not sure what happened to it after that.

Since we have a lot more users joining in now and posting, why don't we start up a photo challenge where users post to a separate category that I could create?

using the rule of thirds

state Bird or flower (thouse in other countys maybe something from there part of the word)
texture
macro
reflections
water

cars
historical landmark
old Buildings
many more

I like the idea of a challenge. I think the problem with them (and not just on this site, but others as well) is that because they must be by definition structured, they are a little more difficult to participate in and administer than a weekly photo contest. I don't know about others, but for me, easy is usually good (at least in competitions
).
I've seen an interesting variation of this called pictures, no words, where someone posts a theme title and then everyone posts a picture that goes along with the theme. No words are allowed. Sometimes the tread dies at 1 and sometimes they live for weeks. While not exactly an assignment it is something that can be easily done (easy for me to say at least, huh Ruth), if there is any interest.jim pope

I agree Jim, they can be difficult to get users to participate.
We've tried it in the past and didnt get a real good response probably because users just didnt have pictures related to those themes or even able to go out to catch a picture related to the current theme.
In the past, we tried to pick a winner of each challenge, but that meant more work for the admin at making a choice, or spend time picking finalist and posting a vote which we already do with the POTW contest.
I have seen other sites that start fun threads similar to what you mentioned.
Someone would post a picture and the next user would see something in that picture and post a picture similar.. i.e.:
1st picture would be a grist mill with waterwheel and a waterfall
2nd person would post a picture with a wheel, or maybe something of just a waterfall.
3rd person would see the water wheel and post an old cart or truck with the main subject... wheel.
etc etc.
Is that what you were thinking?Pbase.com/ReflectionsbyRuth

Well, not exactly although that sounds like a pretty interesting variation, a little like the old game of telephone where kids sat in the circle and whispered a word from ear to ear.
the ones I've seen had the theme of the thread posted as the title for the first picture, the thread starter. Everyone would post a picture in the thread that went with the title. for example, A photo of a mirror could be posted with the single word title "Reflections" . The next person might post a window with a street scene reflected, then a pond with a tree and so on....
The good thing about these is they can be self-sustaining until interest runs out and the variations are unlimited. If it catches on it can be pretty interesting and if it doesn't there isn't a lot of admin time invested.jim pope

We could do that and see how it goes.
How about I create a special forum labeled Byte Community Games ?
or some other word?
That way we can keep those types of threads all in one spot instead of having them intermixed with other forum information.
Any suggestions for a forum title?Pbase.com/ReflectionsbyRuth

Sounds like this was a great idea Mr. Taylor which only couldn't be applied but i guess everything takes time. Its a great idea and i think it should be continued. specially would be interesting for amateur/hobby photographers like me.I tried to start up the monthly challenge again and hardly anyone submitted or commented. So thats why I didnt continue.
