    Unhappy no layers showing

Hi, it's me again with another pesky issue. . . I am working in PE1 and I am trying to insert my signature onto a photo. My problem is that I have no layers showing on the screen. I do have a layers on the bar at the top of my screen, but when I click on that all I have is a list including drop shadow, bevels, etc. Nothing comes up on my screen showing me any layer of anykind. When I say add new layer, the pic I have opened just changes to "layer 2" Nothing on my screen appears as indicated in the numerous tutorials that I am trying to follow. . .
I can't say I'm not jumping in with both feet and tryind to "do", but my gosh, what the heck am I doing wrong. Why don't the layers become visible. . . Maybe I have a wrong setting or something
Any direction or assistance is appreciated. . .

I am using Windows XP Professional, if that's any help.

Ii have not used PE1 but in PE2 and photoshop to add text click the type tool (T) and then click on the photo.

The type tool dialop box will let you set type style and size. Type your name and hit enter to create the new layer on the photo.

I was also confused from tutorials because they made it sound necessary to create the layer first, when the tool actually creates the layer.

The type always centers on the photo and sometimes is lost it the photo details. You can shut off the photo layer if necessary to see the type.

Use the move tool (shortcut V) to drag the text to where you want it. If you do not like the size or style, discard the layer and select the text tool (T) again. Your last settings are still set so making changes are easy.

Your color picker box will make your type the color of your foreground selection.
