Interesting article, if not a bit long winded. I totally agree with his main thought. In my early photographic years, I was very concerned with others' comments and felt the competition and need to be accepted. It wasn't until I became satisified with my work that I stopped caring what other people said. I read the comments and evaluate them. Most comments (especially from this site) are extremely helpful and I attempt to impliment them into my photos. Others, I simply ignore.
Unless this site changes for the better, I will no longer be participating. Incompetance is not an option. I will check back from time to time to see where the majority of people end up. I have REALLY enjoyed viewing your photos and conversing with you!

Thanks Rick.
I feel the same way. I also hope that something happens here to give this forum a future. The owner Paul Larson has not responded to the other thread voicing our concerns. I hope he is well and that the reason for him not responding is not because of some mishap or illness. I hope he responds real soon and explains what is going on. Apparently he has in the recent past expressed some interest in selling the site. If that's the case some other members here have shown some interest or know of someone who has.
I have in the meantime been scouting and googling around for a site where `i could make myself a new home if all comes to naught here. There are plenty out there but none that have taken my fancy yet. Most too big and cumbersome with bad interfaces and critiques of the "WOW" and "nice shot" type.
If you have some suggestions please share them here.
Regards
Fred

This used to be a "wow" and "great shot" site - it's evolved over the years into a place where you can, for the most part, get thoughtful and informed feedback. It took people who cared and persisted in asking for better critiques to get this site to where it is today. We lost a lot of terrific people along the way because the feedback was so poor and people who were honest got nasty emails.
But for those of us who hung in (I'm almost at five years posting here,)I think it's been worth it. At least it has to me.
However, I'm with you Rick. This is my last week. I will post a few shots - at this point two a week doesn't really matter does it
And then, since I can't do this in a vacuum, I'll be on my way too.
Sheila.

Sep 29th, 2008 12:13 PM #6GuestWell that's surrendering quite easily is it not Sheila. How can you say you are in a vacuum when you know all of us are posting and voicing our concerns about the continued excistance of this forum? You are not in a vacuum. If you are it's one you are creating yourself. Rather join us in trying to find a solution. I have sent Paul an e-mail but he has'nt replied. Maybe you can do something having been here so long rather then slipping quietly away. Maybe you can try and contact Paul. Is he still alive? What is happening with him. I care and would like to know. It's worth trying to save this fantastic forum is it not?Originally posted by northbeach

Just received a email from Sheila after I sent a copy of my above post to her by PM. Says she's putting me on her deny list and blames me for all the trouble and stuff here and that I am presumptious and who the hell am I to suggest she's in a self-created vacuum and accusing her of surrendering. She started rambling about all sorts of stuff saying it's her who took all the initiatives to save this site and make contact with Paul and that I,m trying to upstage her or something and that she's the longest serving member here. Anyway I am out of here. I told that old B*&%tch ..yes that's what I called her as she came across at me like one total old B%^7ch to get `F**&&^&^ed as I dont need that kind of email sent to me. That was the final straw for me. Who the hell does she think she is?
And it's not the first email she has sent me, in the past 3 months she has been getting on my case quite a number of times. She's some kind of control freak who thinks she owns this site and feels it her right to read me the rules in private e-mails about how and what I can post or not post and what is allowed and not allowed.
Well it's goodbye for sure now. This post is my last contribution here. I'll miss the decent and genuine people here and hope to meet up with you guys on some other site.
Goodbye and good luck all with Bytephoto and the old cow..
regards
Fred

Maybe we could ask Redbubble.com for a "byte gallery" They offer many many galleries for almost anyone that ask for them? And it is free.
Just trying to keep in touch with my friends here on byte?
Cheers, Joe

The local Photoclub I belong to has a quite good site through My Family. We do have a monthly online contest that is judged by members. Top two winners judge the next month and so on. It has a news and a regular gallery where you can post and critique.
Might be a good thought, Joe.

good idea Joe, would you know how to go about approaching them.
i have had a look at redbubble and have even signed up there a while back but it is a vast site and i just end up getting lost there so didn't make much use of it.
i've still got my list of contact emails that Darren compiled.
mind you, we've still got Byte . we did a pretty good job of managing it ourselves when this problem last occurred - i quite enjoyed it when we took up the competition judging by members. and the way Sheila's Photoclub manages their competition sounds good. so perhaps we could continue here until we get some word of Paul or even Stephen (what happened to Stephen?)
we could even adhere to a couple of guidelines so that the competition page doesn't end up in chaos - like not bumping photos from previous weeks to the fore as pages and pages of images accumulate, then we can stay on track with the current week.

I guess it's a bit advantageous for me that this happened during a couple weeks that I really don't have time to upload or post anyways. I'll try to have some uploads at some point, and leave a comment or two as well.
I hope Paul is ok.
