If Byte fails...
Hey folks,
What makes this site a notch above the norm are the members that are willing to invest thier time and energy to provide meaningful feedback. I'd hate to see the site fail but if it does I have a suggestion that I'd like to throw out there for all of you. Rather than seeing everyone scatter into the ether net if Byte bites the dust how about we try to hang together and find a common substitute, or at least trade email addresses so we can stay in touch. The thread that Rick (rrdjserv) started about alternative sites along with all the confusion here got me to thinking that perhaps we could search for a replacement as a group. If you think this idea has merit and would like to share your address but are hesitant to put it out there I'll volunteer to coordinate via email.
Feel free to post any thoughts on this subject and if you'd like to share your email address, but privately address one to me at 0therstu44@sbcglobal.net (that's a zero at the beginning of the addy)

Darren, I've been wondering about this too.
My first thought is that perhaps we could initially create a user group so that we can both keep in touch and exchange ideas.
Google and Yahoo have user groups but someone has to manage the group and moderate it. I did one for a sick friend last year and I found it time consuming and I really didn't know what I was doing. But the potential is there to be excellent.
Anyone think this is a good idea? In the meantime, let's continue with cpr in the form of posting weekly, comminting, taking down our posts on Sunday and beginning again.
I feel as though we're a digital version of The Flying Dutchman ~ a ghost site destined to surf the internet for ever.
This is the legend of The Flying Dutchman.
Flying Dutchman, according to folklore, is a ghost ship that can never go home, and is doomed to sail the oceans forever. The Flying Dutchman is usually spotted from afar, sometimes seen to be glowing with ghostly light. It is said that if she is hailed by another ship, her crew will often try to send messages to land or to people long since dead. In ocean lore, the sight of this phantom ship is reckoned by seafarers to be a portent of doom.

Darren, that's a good idea. A pay site is unfortunately not in my budget, and I'd like to make sure I'm only on places that are SFW, so that pretty much leaves me with Betterphoto and Flickr, unless I move into the Pentax forums. Not a Flickr fan, so I don't anticipate showing up there. I think betterphoto has potential - if a nucleus begins leaving useful comments (to go along with the few people there that already do) the movement might catch on. I'll keep checking here - and posting here - until the day I get that 404 error, or the day I feel like Will Smith in "I Am Legend."
Sheila - love the Flying Dutchman analogy.
Far as I can tell, neither admin has been to the site at all this week. I have no problem giving any of you guys an email address, I'm just not keen on posting it for the whole ether. Anyone who'd like mine is welcome to it.

I'd hate to say goodbye to all of our friends here. I hesitate to put emails on the net, so all that are interested, please send Cindy (Cindylea) or myself a PM and we would be happy to share contact info

Soooooo, why don't we start a group on Flickr, just in case. While I'm not a big Flickr fan either, it seems easier than the Yahoo Groups (I'm with Sheila, sort of a high degree of difficulty). I'm going to PM Darren with my email address (bad experience once putting it on the net), since he volunteered to compile.
I propose the Flickr group as a "lifeboat" for the Flying Dutchman syndrome. It could at least give those interested a place to land until this is sorted out.jim pope

If there is anything I can do to help please let me know. I would certainly miss everyone here. Anyone can send me a private message or reply to this forum. I would go along with most any idea you would want to try.

I'm happy to compile email addresses for whomever would like to stay in touch regardless of whether or not Byte does fail. My biggest concern would be that the site would suddenly go caput before those interested could exchange info. The easiest way for me to do this is for you to send an email to the address I listed in the first post and I can then easily add you to my contacts. What I can do once the list is compiled is send out an email to everyone and then you can add all the names to your contact list.
Sheila, your suggestion regarding Yahoo groups seems like it my have promise. Anyone have any experience with jump-starting something like this please speak up. I'm not a big flickr fan either but if enough of us go there together it would be fine with me. I edited out my reference to another site as I thought it wasn't quite kosher to be suggesting another site while this one still lives however feeble it may be.
So far, I've got Sheila, Kevin, Buddy, Joe, Gary(Digimo) and I should have Pippa but am having trouble locating her (must be cause she's across the Big Pond).

Darren, I've sent you an email. Checked out the site you referenced last night, I could move there if byte fades into the ether. The other site I'm on (which can be found in my profile - thought I'd limit this to being viewed by members only) also allows people to form clubs, so that could be an option and an alternative to the megasite.
Just tossing out options. I've learned much from people around here, and I'd hate to lose touch with them. At least my subscription to PopPhoto kicked in last week.

I am with you guys on this. I would hate to lose touch with everyone. I do like Sheila's idea of using this site and pulling our photos off on Sunday so it doesn't become congested. Hopefully this is only a temporary thing happening here.
