    Photography magazine recommendations

I'm looking to subscribe to a photography magazine for tips, news, and techniques/tutorials. Obviously, there are quite a few out there, so I thought I'd see if anyone has any recommendations. I'm looking more for technique discussions and tips than for page after page of ads and product reviews, so I was thinking photo techniques, but that might be a bit over my head, and I think I want monthly instead of bi-monthly.

I've also thought about outdoor photographer, but I live in a city, so the practical applications might be a bit limited. But I am anything but a studio photographer, so that might be better than other options out there. I also don't need anything that focuses on people photography, especially staged shoots.

Does anyone here have any suggestions? I wouldn't mind hearing from admin if they have a moment or 2 for a recommendation.

    Hi,

I'm afraid I can't help you as the magazines published here in France are probably not the same where you live.
I'm sure there are others who have suggestions, though.
    Kind Regards.

    Stephen,
Thanks for weighing in; I appreciate it. Your answer certainly makes sense, particularly if some of those magazines are in French. For me, that'd unforunately be the same as not having a subscription.

    hi Steve

here in south west wales i been buying a uk publication called 'Digital Photo', its a monthly and comes with a dvd of step by step tutorials which i have found really useful. there might be an american version. it does have a fair amount of ads (par for the course)however the bulk of it is sound - tutorials on the dvd are also documented in the magazine. i expect the us market is saturated so good luck in sifting and hope someone comes up with good advice for you.

In my (many) business travels, I often pick up "pro digital imaging" or "popluar photography", but I subscribe to PCPhoto. All have their good and bad issues, but I thought PC photo gave me more post processing tips.

    Steve,

I subscribe to PC Photo and Popular Photography. I like them both, although they are about half ads. My son subscribes to Outdoor Photographer, which I steal from him on occasion. I prefer the writers in it, but then I do a lot of that kind of work.

I love the european mags.... They are expensive....But I feel they are leaps and bounds in front of the US mags.
    Just my @ cents worth

Thanks, everyone, for responding. I've checked out your recommendations, and I think I'll give Popular Photography a run for a while. I appreciate it!

    Steve.

I think best bang for the buck is to join NAPP - you get excellent of daily online tutorials and tips with an extensive library of past tutorials. They have a help desk that is great, your question will be answered quickly and usually very helpfully. You get Photoshop User Mag ($9.95 cover price) that comes out bi-monthly. The roster of talented digital photographers and PS experts that offer tutorials etc., is impressive.

I'm a member and it's $100 a year. If you're a serious digital junkie I think it's the best value there is - you also get member discounts on some things. Many people here have a lot of money invested in high end equipment, this is an investment in education.

    take a look at photoshopuser.com

    Sheila.

PS and you can have a gallery on the site.

for uk people (thought i think they deliver worldwide) at least i would recommend highly 'Digital SLR Photography' see website : www.digitalslrphoto.com i'm not too keen on mags that have whole huge sections dedicated to photoshop, though in '08 it is a resolution of mine to learn Photoshop as i do pretty much all my post process just in Lightroom at present. said mag is all about getting things right in camera from the off and only has one five min photoshop tutorial per issue.
    Regards,
    Kwame.
