    Editor's corner week of 11/26/07

The editing challenge for this week is up. This one's from my archives from a trip to Puerto Vallarta a few years back, but I've never really gotten around to doing anything with it. I think there are a few options with it, and a couple challenges, so I'm sharing it for the editing challenge.

I'm uploading a large version to give a little more flexibility in editing, particularly with cropping (the link below should take you to the larger version).

Have fun, and don't forget to share how you work your magic! The winner will be announced on Sunday, 12/2.

Twas the best I could come up with. This is a tight crop of the original with level adjustments and a wee bit of sharpening.

OK, here is my selection for the Puerto Vallarta Sidestreet editing challenge.

Thank you all for entering. As I still consider myself to be just a hack with a camera, I really appreciate all the details in how the edits were made. In particular, links to tutorials and add-ons are great. It is really neat to see how other people can view a scene, and what they draw from it.

Most of you caught all the major challenges I saw in this scene - the sky, the lens distortion, and the somewhat central location of the road. What I really like about this scene is that it seemed to be so typical of a small Mexican city as I experienced them.

I had a tough choice, and I eventually had to open up each shot in tabs and go through a process of elimination. I really liked the range of techniques used - colors, crops, flips, textures, etc.

In the end, the shot that most conveyed Mexico to me was Pippa's first edit. The overall color treatment really emphasizes the adobe architecture that is so integral to this part of Mexico, yet the bold colors are still there where they should be, and the overall image has a nice sharpness. The color, texture, and detail really draw the eye away from the weak sky that I so miserably captured in the original. Well done, Pippa.

Pippa, it's your turn to post a shot for the rest of us to edit.

Thank you to everyone! I suggest that (except for Pippa) we clear the critique section for the next round.
