probably an easy one to answer
Hey I was wondering if there was a limit on how wide of an appeture you could use on a dSLR. I was looking at getting an 85mm f/1.8 for my D50. That would work right? Also any recomendations. I'd like to use it for basketball shots and portraits. Thanks, Matt

The 1.8 works fine on the D50. I borrowed a friend of mine's. It's a great lens. And, all Nikon AF lenses work on digital whether they were made for them or not.

The f/1.8 is a very good lens, but if you can find a used f/1.4 85mm, it is superb.
Here is a great website created by Bjorn, he reviews all Nikkors, and rates them. He is independent of Nikon....

May I suggest looking at keh.com, and buying a used lens, rated exc or exc+, it will be like new from them.

To add another question to this:
Can I use my Dad's OLD Minolta lenses on my new Digital Rebel?
The first salesman at Wolf implied as much to another customer, but when I called (another Wolf store) that salesman said no...I know what Canon would say, they want to sell a lens! Does anyone know?

Emily, it's unlikely. Minolta, Canon and Nikon generally made different mounts for each of their lenses. I would take one of your Dad's lenses into a reputable camera store (we don't have Wolf up here so I don't know them) and ask to try it on one of the Canon's. Then you'll know for sure.
