Resolution in Digital Cams?

So i just bought a panasonic FX07 and thought I has asked all the right questions about picture quality but I've noticed a problem: I've taken shots at the highest quality possible (it only gives me standard adn fine) and at the highest megapixel possible (7). WHen i download the shots to my computer and open them in photoshop, it's huge (45"w) but still only at 72dpi. I called panasonic (and canon) and they say you can't change the dpi on any of their models. I find this hard to believe b/c i had an older canon and you could do that. Isn't there a way to select dpi - at least 72,180 and 300 when you actuallly TAKE the photos rather than having to go and manually do it all the time in photoshop? Are there any cameras you can suggest I might look at around the $300-$350 range??

I'm no pro but I use Irfanview to open and resize my pics and I think they're all 72dpi. Are you getting this confused with ISO which on my camera goes from ISO 100 (best quality ie less noise) to ISO 400 (brighter but more noise)?

All point and shoots to my knowledge shoot at 72dpi.
But once you put it into photoshop or other software, you just change the dpi to 300 and save as a tiff file.

Thats what I have done with some of my pictures I took with my Oly C750UZ.
I just changed the dpi from 72 to 300 and I have printed some up to 10x15 on my Epson 4000 pro printer.
I also had a professional printing company print 2 of those images up to 45" on the long end using a Gicliee type printer, they all turned out fine.

I think its only the DSLR's that shoot files at 300dpi right off the camera.
My Nikon D70 does 300dpi

no not getting confused with ISO or anything. I"m a graphic designer, and as such, everything that goes to print must be at least 300 dpi, just thought there were cameras of this level on the market where you could choose it to take all the shots at either 72, 180 or 300 but as it turns out, not really. Most everyone I've talked to has confirmed - they're all basically 72, so that's fine, i think I"m going to stick with what i got.

yeah i have an epson 1270 (6 years old) that, belive it or not, has produced great images for me time and time again at 13x19 ". So, provided I've got a good shot with nice sensitivity and no blur, I get a great print.

Hi take no notice of the dpi seting of the picture from camera.

its only a visual seting, 72 dpi is best suited for monitors,
i think you are judging quality of photo by the dpi seting.
