Winter is coming, for me in Aberdeen anyway. Was wandering if any of the pro's had tips for taking photos in the snow? From the very basic to the techinical would be all appreciated.

Snow can be difficult to shoot because it is so white and reflective that it will fool the light meter in your camera, but you can take some steps to keep this from happening. When you shoot snow, the camera will try to produce 18 percent gray or the same as a photo gray card. To keep this from happening, you must shoot in full manual mode with your camera assuming that your camera has this functionality. First in manual mode, try to find something that would be of midtone lighting in you scene and then use this setting as a starting point. Next bracket your shot by which I mean to shoot at the light meter reading and then open up a 1/4 stop and then 1/2 stop. By bracketing, you pretty much guarantee yourself that you will capture the properly lighted scene. I bracket a lot expecially when shooting sunlit snow.

Wow it really is complicated. I dont have a full manual shooting mode, just a manual exposure shooting mode. I have the Sony Cybershot W17. Not sure what you mean by bracketing so i assume maybe my camera doesnt have that capability!!??? Thanks for your help, and those links. Snowflake photography is really amazing. I'll have a wee shot in the snow, see what i can come up with. Thanks again, Fiona.
