MORE COMMENTS and Ratings
I would like to see more members giving Positive comments to others work. It seems to me that there is a growing group of users that see this as a FREE place to just upload a few pics for their friends to see.... Who knows, maybe I am wrong, but I would just like to see more members commenting and rating photos...... It is just kindof strange when you go to a photo in a Gallery and see that there has been 230 views of this photo and 1 comment.... What are your feelings on this ??????

I abso;utely agree. The interaction with other photographers is what it is all about. Maybe a gallery specifically devoted to comment and critcism might be in order.

Re: MORE COMMENTS and Ratings
I agree 100%... When I return to the site (about 10 times a day) I find some people appear to be using bytephoto.com as file storage. This is why I like the levels that can be achieved with participation. Maybe we get too much right of the bat?Originally posted by Bagsfan5

As for people not posting comments... I am not a professional photographer by any means, so sometimes I have no idea what to comment on. Other than saying "nice picture". But I view all of them.

what type of comments?
I personally would like to see some advices, suggestions or criticisms on my photos so I can explore areas I am not aware of.
I even state that in my profile to tell ppl to tear me apart..
I usually dont try to do the same to others as it can be quite a sensitive issue.

yappiez (tear apart ???)
There are many less BLOODY ways to comment on a photo than to tear someone apart
I try to comment on all the photo that I can and that I can see that the photographer is trying to go somewhere with his or her work. I do try to tell the photographer some of the things that I see both good and bad about his photo. Just telling someone all the bad things does not really help him. He or she need to also know what he or she is doing right as well as wrong. I am NOT a professional at all, but I feel that I do have experience that I can share with others.
One other thing that I see happening with the POTW is that some members are judging on the subject that they see ( not considering the quality of work ) as others see the photo as a whole ( subject and technical work ) and judge from that... I have seen several Grade 10 and 9 given out to some SORRY TO SAY THIS pretty BAD photos when you consider that it is up for the PHOTO OF THE WEEK... I am most likely not making any friend from this message, but we are talking about improving things in the site.....

I would certainly fit in the "beginners" catagory...
Bagsfan5, I agree with you that a new camera owners photos would probably not compare to proffesional shots. I also read your post stating how some pictures are getting higher reviews that you think they should. But, this is the great thing about this gallery. Everyone has a different opinion as to what a nice photo is. I've seen a few 10' ratings that I may have ranked 6 or vice versa.
I basically use this site just to compare shots and try to get some advice on how I can improve my photgraphic skills. POTW is a neat way to look at the pictures the the artists want to be judged. In my opinion it doesnt matter which photo is selected for POTW because we all win by being able to view such nice work.

While you are considering, would it be possible to have sub-galleries within our user galleries? What I mean is could I have a sub catagory animals, flowers etc to subdivide my gallery? Thanks.Regards,

I like what other people are saying about more comments. I would just like to add that I would appreciate constructive criticism as much as the "Great Pic" comment (even though I like that too).

On this I will need to get a clarification that these sub galleries would not be allowed to be ¦ “private the issue here for me is to avoid being used for the distribution of adult and or copyrighted materialsWhile you are considering, would it be possible to have sub-galleries within our user galleries? This thread along with this one http://www.bytephoto.com/forums/show...=&threadid=463 got me thinking about all that has been suggested and how best to implement some of them
As for POTW I feel it should remain basically intact with the possibility of giving some type of recognition to the second and third place photos ¦.
Here is what I think are the pros of POTW- easy to enter
- not having defined category allows any member to simply use there current favorite
- when viewing the POTW it offers a very diverse array of good photos from which to garner ideas from
- the gallery format is not well suited for ongoing constructive evaluation of any one particular photo
- with the easy of voting often times there are little or no comments attached ¦ well a high vote is nice it does little to help each of us improve
- the short time frame would not imo be suitable for an assigned category type of photo
What I do think would work is a forum especially for assigned category type photos ¦ with new a category / project being introduced say every 10 ¦ 15 days ¦ this would provide imo an ideal place to foster an atmosphere for learning ¦
Some the pros of a new assignment specific forum- it would allow each of us to comment and critique each others work without having to ¦ “vote and ¦ “score a photo with a numerical value
- it would allow a members to ask for help with a particular photo assignment and the same photo could be retouched by other members to display different techniques
- the variation of assignments / projects inevitably would help each of us improve by taking photos in places and of things that we may not normally do
- a popular topic would be able to stay active as long as contributions continue to that particular thread
- in the long haul it would also promote growth and participation in the other forums as well
Cons
- without the voting system there would not be a clear cut winner of any particular category assignment
- as it requires a person to go and take a photo to fit the assignment participation may be light until it catches on
I Ύm sure that I have only scratched the surface of the pros and cons here but if you all are interested I Ύd like to give this a try ¦also unlike the POTW were I feel it would be improper of myself to enter or comment ¦ I could actually get to participate
Your feedback is both important and appreciated
Paul

Paul,
When I spoke of sub-galleries, I did not mean that they would be private. What I meant was that I as a user would be able to organize my photos by topic or subject type. That way I could share a sub-gallery with friends or associates without linking to the whole gallery. For instance, I might have a gallery of my wildlife photos, and a gallery of general pictures. These would all still show publicly as part of my user gallery. Just a thought. It would be similar to the folder structure in windows.
