    Unhappy Help!!

When I have my camera (Kodak DX7590 digital) set on auto & the flash is open (especially in our living room), the pictures turn out really dark. However, if the flash is closed, the pictures come out brighter. That makes no sense to me! What in the world?

    Flash

Without knowing what type of camera you have, I am assuming here, that either your flash is set to 1/4 or 1/2 power and your aperature is set to a high number like F/8 which would result in a dark room. If the flash is closed, then the camera if it's set to auto would open up the aperature to a larger setting say f/2.5 and the room would be much brighter.

Without more information about the camera you're using, point and shoot or SLR and the setting you're using, auto or manual, it is hard to answer your question.
