I ran into a similar situation with a HP desktop that I was working on for my mom ฆ it had a proprietary keyboard with shortcuts ฆ and when I installed a non branded copy of XP ฆ it did not recognize the hotkeys ฆ. I was lucky and found just the software/driver on the HP site and that did the trick ฆ.
if you haven พt already done so see if Sony has keyboard software/driver that you can download for their laptopsBest Regards,
Steve

Did you see this one - Not sure if this is what you need I do see a reference to the keyboard in the description ฆ. might be worth looking at if you have not already done so
นฆSony Notebook Control พ SONY ฎ Notebook Control Device Driver Utility - Installs essential system components.
A notebook controller manages the transfer of data between the computer and attached devices such as a display, keyboard, disk drive, etc

For the newer notebook, sony has rename hotkey as event service.
What do you need is
(1) go to sony's web site. esupport.sony.com
(2) choose your model
(3) go to driver download
(4) get Sony@ Notebook Utilities
Under it, there is a note states as following...
======================
This utility installs the originally shipped version of the following Sony*ฆ ฎ Notebook Utilities:
* Sony Utilities DLL
* Sony Setting Utility Series
* Battery Check Utility
* VAIO*ฆ ฎ Event Services
This installation program enables Hotkeys, and Battery Check functionality.
======================
After installation, you should see a MS-DOS windows saying "sony event services manager is starting"
Then your hot key should work. Here is the article I found from sony
