choosing a camera

Hope this is correct section of forum to post this, i need a camera that can take excellent photos in and out of nightclubs. The camera need to be able to deal with flashin/moving lights and capture crowd shoots.

Ive been told to get SLR camera but have no idea which one would be the best one for me, can anyone help?

Do you want a digital SLR or a film SLR?

If you want a digital, you need to be able to spend in the neighborhood of $1000. A Nikon D-70 should fill the bill, nicely. Or a Canon 300D "Rebel".

Basically if you are going to shoot a lot of NIGHT Scenes, then you need either of the following.

1) A camera with a Fast Lens. A Fast lens means a WIDER Apperture, so that more light can pass through the Lens in a shorter Period of time when the SHUTTER Opens and closes. If the time of the Shutter to Open and Close is not Fast enough then the Picture will be BLURRY since your HAND will shake by that time.
A fast Lens is RECOGNIZED by the F stop for eg F1.8 F2.2 F2.8 are Considered as fast. For a Canon Digital SLR, Canon 50mm F2.8, Canon 85mm F1.8 and Canon 100mm F2 lenses are good choices for your type of NEED.

2) If you Do not have a FAST Lens, then you will need IMAGE STABLIZED Lens or a TRIPOD (which is inconvinient). An Image Stabilized lens (such as CANON 28-135mm IS Lens) will compensate your HAND movement with an Inbuilt stabilizor (ONLY IN A SHORT RANGE OF SHUTTER SPEEDS)

3) Some Cameras Like the PANASONIC DMC-FZ20 Camera have inbuilt IMAGE STABILIZOR.

4) Another option is to use DIGITAL SLR CAMERAS LIke the Digital REBEL or CANON 20D where you can user HIGH ISO SPEEDS LIKE ISO 400, ISO 800 upto ISO 3200.
More ISO = More SENSITIVE SENSOR . It means you can take a good NOISE Free picture without using any of the above choices. But these cameras are expensive > $700 upwards for the BODY alone.

From what I've read....go for the new Nikon....if you have the bucks to buy the kit with lens, and then buy other needed lenses i.e. zoom or others.

Check the reviews....Nikon seems to be more full featured digital slr at a good price....though more than the Rebel.

I agree with what Leo said.

It's really up to you on what excellent photos are. I've like the pocket sized canon digital camera and found they can focus in darker environments better than others. They are handy, and easy to have at a club. But the pocket sized cameras won't give the choices of quality that the SLR cameras have. If you want the good quality shots and being able to have an external flash, and taking some action photos without a flash....the SLR digitals (like canon rebel or 20D) help a lot.
