It could be the extent your using them. I would recommend running levels once you get done to adjust the tones. Many times images with get a flat or washed out looking when doing functions such as the one your working with.
Hope this helps. But if you could a before/after would help so we can see what extent your try to change the image, and the out come.

Not really sure what the effect your going for. The orginal image seemed to have a slight green tone and what I feel was fairly bright. Your second image which was the edited version seems to be really bright and had a fairly noticable yellow tone.
Many times when running controls such as the one you ran, the skin tones and colors get blown way out of color. I usually try to focus with the skin tones and then try to work the image from there.
With not knowing or ever seeing any of these people, I have no idea what there true skin tones are, but I tride to take a guess. I probably went a little darker than they are, but I have always been a fan of that. Some people often state I over saturate, but again its all personal choice.
The image showed a fair amount of noise and seemed over sharpened. With that I ran it through Neat Image to remove noise and sharpen marks. Once completed I ran levels to bring out the true color or the subjects (or what I thought was the right colors) and darken background to allow subjects to stand out. After that I ran a second layer to soften the background and reduce to sharpeness and noise marks. Added a white frame and saved....
Total time was about 3 minutes. Again I am not sure what your trying to do. I mostly tried to just remove the noise, bring colors back to life, and soften to cover blimish marks.
What is your purpose in running the high/shad filter? This is my edit, not sure if its what your looking for. If your looking for something differant let me know I will see what I can do. Also what editing program are you using?
