EXIF data....
Maybe a dumb one, maybe not. With the talk about EXIF data elsewhere, I was wondering how it is that people post it with their images. Also, with regards to the EXIF and post-processing, at what point is the info lost? By that I mean is it retained when cropping or resizing? or lost when adjusting levels? Anyone with any insight here?

When you take a photo with about any digital camera, it auto-adds in the technical info about the photo. I dont know if you have looked at one, but it goes into telling the camera, cameras version and software, exposure, camera settings, date, and so on.
As stated above its automaticaly attached to the photo. More or less you can do about anything you want with that image and still keep it. The thing is you have to save it in a exif friendly manor. Each program is differant, but Photoshop allows you to save it as long as you do the "SAVE AS" or "SAVE" function. If you use the "SAVE AS WEB" if will strip the exif data.
Most modern day programs are exif friendly, so you really dont have to worry about it as much. But some free programs you down load off the neat and often free trial version programs like to strip the exif data as well.
Hope this helps... If you have any more questions post up what program your editing with and maybe fellow users can help you out.

Jim-
As usual JCW3 beat me to the punch - and as usual hes right on.
The practical use for EXIF data might very well be the settings that were used for that really great shot you took either last week or last year. EXIF includes: White Balance, shutter speed, aperature, flash on/off, Focal length (I love that one) and of course time and date
There are several FREE Exif readers available on the Internet.
I use a really great program called ACDC (6.0). The program allows you to open your photo folders and displays thumbnails really, really fast. It provides you with many options, from batch renaming to batch resizing. Some good basic editing tools, but most of all you can keep track of the hundreds of shots you just can't part with.
I believe the site is listed as AC systems. They let you download a 30 day free trial version and it only costs about $29.95 (just below my wifes "budget radar").If it moves...Shoot it.
If it Doesn't...Shoot it Twice !!

Thanks for the replies all.
Actually I understand what EXIF is and all but what I was wondering is how do you get it to post with your image? Mind you I have only posted once (in POTW) but did not see the chance to add the info. Is it automatically picked up or manually input? I actually view at least some of the EXIF by just right clicking on the filename in Windows Explorer and click on the details there. Thanks again....

EXIF is automatically added to your photo from the camera and will stay with it unless you remove it. So if you posted your image in the POTW and it was not there then you removed it somewhere in your post processing.Originally posted by jlpriestley

Again what program are you using to edit and reduce file size and how are you saveing that file?
As far as posting the info on the website here, if you have it attached with the photo, it will automatical show up. So post up how you are saving the file and what program you are using. Maybe we can help you save your photos in a friendly EXIF manor.
