Question why does cropping reduce file size so much?

I'm having trouble with cropping pictures and file size. When I crop a picture even just a little bit the file size reduces tremendously.

For example- I had a 2272 x 1704, 2.1 MB picture that I cropped just a little bit to 1980 x 1692 and it dropped the file size to .97 MB- thats over half the file size.

Can someone please explain why this happens?

It is due to the amount of Jpeg compression your imaging program uses. When you click "Save As", see if there is an options or Advanced button and choose the lowest compression/highest file size. That should take care of it some. Of course you could also save it as a .Tiff file.
