EXIF Data and Commenting on other photos
I am finding more and more photos that don't include the EXIF data when the photographer uploads their photo. This is one of the rules of entry - but the problem I have is it is hard to learn how to be a better photographer without seeing what settings someone else has used to get their shot.
Also it could just be me but I am finding less and less people actually taking the time to comment on other peoples photographs.
I am interested in other peoples opinions

exif data
Tara,
From what I have heard, Neat image wipes out the exif data of the saved file so any uploads are missing the data.
I dont remember it being a rule, just a suggestion to help others learn.
I think because its summer, many people dont have the time to comment on as many as they did in the winter months.
I have also heard that some people dont want to comment and rate photos if they too have entered in the POTW competition. Maybe then dont want to be swayed like some have in the past.Pbase.com/ReflectionsbyRuth

Confused
Having just said that rule #5 says exif data must be included I now read different rules and guidelines in this discussion area could someone clarify this? Must exif data be included or is it not required.
Using programs such as neat image focus magic etc removes exif data and would be a considerable advantage if no exif data is required.
Thanks in advance for your help.
Cheers.

Re: Re: EXIF Data and Commenting on other photos
I don't use neat image so I can't comment on this but I am sure there is actually a way to save the image including the EXIF data. I'll have a search on it and get back to you.Originally posted by Flyball Rebel

On my normal images though I use photoshop and to get the EXIF data to remain when you post it you need to use the "save as" function and not the "save as web". The save as web removes the EXIF data.
I can understand why people don't like to comment when they have their own images in the POTW comp. The only problem with this reasoning is that it means that up to 80 people may not be commenting that week. I know myself that when I do not have a entry I don't normally visit the site as much so I am unlikley to spend much time commenting. If other people are the same as me it means less and less people commenting on the photos.
I have one entry this week and I have already rated or commented on about 3/4 of the photos yet in most cases I am the only comment and no-one has commented on my photo.
I'll finish my rant now

Tara, I know what you mean about the EXIF. One has to wonder where it goes sometimes....
As for ratings... it is frustrating sometimes. For me personally I try to rate the photos that I like personally, and then photos that I find something to critique. Sometimes I see a photo that I have "seen" before. Granted that photographer put that photo there and wants a critique but I suppose it comes down to time (and what's on TV
) I know when I put a photo out there I put it there because I thought it was good, and wanted some input. It is frustrating when that doesn't happen. (stomping feet right now). But sometimes photos are just "good" and with 50 or more photos it gets difficult for me personally to get more than 10 or 20 when I am rating. Guess I just try to grin and bear it. (did any of this make sense??)

OK I've updated the rules so the exif data is optional, but recommended.Kind Regards.

I will comment on photos that stand out to me more often than just a good photo. But I also try to order by least popular and comment on the photos that seem to be overlooked. Sometimes just an acknowledgement that someone has even looked at your photo is good

Well I am a big EXIF reader myself. I often set down and look over a photo for a few minutes, then read over and review the exif data. I often actually dont spend the time to look at a photo if the exif is not there (unless its a great photo or the photo needs good supportive comments).
But as posted before, the free version of NEAT IMAGE does strip the exif data from the image. But it can be added back in if one would like to, but it does take a little work to add exif data back to a image. (But I will comment on this to much because I have found in other forums and contest that this method gets greatly abused when EXIF becomes manditory or important
).
I have to admit I have even posted a few without exif data. But I usually try my best to keep it attached.
But as you stated I find the exif the be actually as much fun to read as looking at the photo.

Not a clue
Im very new to this. I don't have a clue what EXIF data is. I use Ulead to size my photos to standerd size. I save them in jpeg format. This is all I know how to do. I would love to enter a photo but I don't know how to do all of the stuff the rules require.
