Picture Titles for the POTW Finalists
Hello,
I have a simple suggestion for the finalists posted for voting. I think that the title is a coherent part of the picture. A good title can put the picture in an appropriate context and make it more interesting. Sometimes a title itself can tell a story. The space should be sufficient to have the title included on the page of the final cuts.
What do you think?
Thanks,
Bluesky

Re: Picture Titles for the POTW Finalists
Thank you Bluesky for bringing this up. I have thought the same and really support this addition to the voting. I spend considerable time on titles because of their importance in setting the tone for the image. They need to be included in the voting.
I also have a suggestion about the quality of the image being used for voting. You are using the Byte generated images which are of low quality for final judging. I would like to suggest the images at least be hot linked to their originals.
In all honesty the Byte generated image is terrible... the algorithym needs to be reworked so that the quality is improved. At 500 pixels, I am able to achieve a much cleaner image in PS7 and still keeping the image under 60K. When I look at the smaller images generated at other photo sites (e.g. PBase, ImageEvent) I feel that this is one area that could be improved significantly.
This is not meant to take anything away from the incredible job that you, Paul and Steven, have done with the site. I am a regular here because of your dedication and creativity.

Titles have been a big thing I have started to also comment on over the last few weeks. I feel a title can often turn a confussing/simple photo into something amazing.
Sometimes a photo will speak for itself, or thats what we all dream of when taking it. But the truth is that does not always happen, and it may even seem confussing to a viewer. A title is a small intro that allows a new comer to see the photo the same way you did when photographing it.
I feel a creative title can actually give a photo a totally differant tone and feeling... Sometimes what was confussing for a reader can now be allowed to be seen clearly with a little guidance.
You got my TITLE vote

my $0.02 I disagree with the importance of a title. I spend zero amount of time coming up with a title for my images. I simply title the image the first thing that comes to mind. hmmmmm ... maybe it's due to the subject matter that I shoot. but I guess it is partly because I am under the assumption that it is a visual art form rather than poetic. (~GASP)
But I guess Photography can be poetic.
But Why do some photographers spend hours coming up with a long, drawn out "perfect" title? Is it because the image can't stand on it's own merits? Is the image confusing and need further clarification through a description?
I guess I'm just not on the same wavelength.
thanks

While I cannot argue that the image is the main point of this gallery I believe a well versed title shows important insight into the image composition.
I am not suggesting that users spend hours or days coming up with a title however a well thought out title does enhance the overal presentation.
I look at it as a package in some ways and believe it should be taken into consideration for the contest.
