    C-3000 RETRIVAL - any ideas?

    C-3000 Problem!
Hi - I have a problem with my Olympus C-3000. I have the USB drivers installed - when i plug the camera in with the USB cable, I get the icon in my system tray that shows a connected hardware device - when I double click on that, it says "Olympus Digital Camera". Here is the problem: I can't get anything off the camera. I've heard that you have to have the camedia software - is this true? there HAS to be some way around it! I have a brand new 128 MB smart card in it. The camera doesn't show up as an extra drive or anything, there is no way to browse the camera for the pictures. I am using WIN XP, I've tried downloader, cam2pc, and neither of them detected my camera properly. I don't want the Camedia software, and I bought this camera used (without the software). There has to be some program, some XP tweak for a WIA driver, or something I can use to explore the camera and get the pics off the smart card...any ideas? Thanks
    Todd

    Hmmm

Not sure about this one. From your description it sounds like your autoplay isn't working as it should but even if that was the case the camera should show up as an extra drive. Fixing the autoplay is no problem. If you pm me with your Email address I can send you the patch that fixes it.

With windows Xp when you connect any media to the PC including a blank CDR the autoplay should bring up a box asking what you want to do with it. If it doesn't then the Autoplay is either off or needs fixing.

Do you have XP service pack 1 or 2 or no service pack at all. Quite often upgrading to service pack 2 can mess with the autoplay feature. If you don't have either service pack then now would be a good time to update. Just installing the service pack can often fix numerous problems.

To check which service pack you have just right click on the My Computer icon and select properties. Then look under where it reads System to see if you have any service pack.

    Regards

    Matt

Hi - I have service pack 2 - everything is up to date. I was reading somewhere that Microsoft cannot support certain cameras due to legal issues - some Olympus models being among them - in an attempt to "force" you to buy the software that comes with the camera. I don't know how true this is, but i guess anything is possible, but there has to be some way around it....

I also am unable to get photos off my recently purchased C-3000 w/out software. I can use iPhoto on my mac, but winXP was unable to find any software from automagically searching.

Did you ever have any luck?

Pretty damn frustrating Olympus doesn't just have a simple USB driver on their site...

nope. never have had any luck, i've tried some third party programs, but it looks like i'm gonna have to just suck it up and buy the damn software from olympus. LAME! i was sure there'd be some way to get the pics off..there has to be a way, and somebody somewhere knows how!

Well, I got it to work.

I ended up using a TWAIN driver and importing thru Photoshop. I also installed the Win2000 USB driver from Olympus' site, but I'm not sure if that was necessary. The last necessary ingredient was finding a DLL that apparently comes with the Camedia software, which is required by the TWAIN driver.

A hassle, but it works. Doesn't seem to transfer video, but I haven't played with it much.

    Win2k driver:
    http://www.olympusamerica.com/files/Win2000.exe

    TWAIN driver:
    http://users.cybercity.dk/~ccc9169/c2100uz.html

DLL file (found by searching for the filename thru Google):
    http://hjem.get2net.dk/reffstrup/olympus/

If you need any help with making it all work, post & I'll see what I can do.

    Nate.

yeah, buying a $5-$15 reader is probably a good suggestion, especially since the camera is pretty awful with battery use.

i'm away from my PC and it's been too long to remember offhand where the files went, but i remember the README for the TWAIN driver telling where to copy the .DLL file, so check that out.
