mixing brand names- does this work?

Hello! I was just wondering if anyone in here knew whether you can use a contrasting name brand of Speedlight with a Sony Alpha a100. I am pretty new to external flash, and wanted to purchase one but all the Sony ones compatible with my camera are over $500. In addition to that, I found one with similar features and controls made by Nikon for ony $85. Does anyone know whether they would still be compatible or whether they wouldn't sync correctly?

Here is a link to Adorama with flashes compatable with Sony. A good place to start. Find a model that suits your needs then Google for the best price and seller. I have had good luck with Adorama and several other stores.
