I've got the D200 and I love it. A friend has the D80 and he is very happy. The big difference is the data buffer allowing more burst shots in the D200. The D80 gets more shots from a battery charge. Also, the D200 uses a compact flash memory card, the D80 uses the SD card.
Can't go wrong either way.

As I already have several compact flash cards.....am leaning towards the D200, just need to convince the wife that it would be a good birthday gift for me and that way she can have my D70.

If you can afford the D200, and have good glass... choose it. You might even consider checking keh.com for their used cameras. You can't go wrong buying a camera from them, and their rating system is VERY generous.

I agree with Carolyn, D200 is really a more flexible SLR. But the two of them are both good so either will be a very good choice. I suggest that you visit www.dpreview.com to check their in depth review for the 2 cams.

One thing to consider is weather proofing. The D80 is plastic, the D200 is an alloy. If I were you, I'd be sure to go to a camera shop and handle both of them. Be aware of your needs, and let that guide you. dpreview that wynngd mentions is a great recource for specs/comparisons.

I have had the D200 for about a year now and it's fabulous. Although it didn't make me a better photographer
I like its rugged build because of my extensive work travel requirements and the fact that it gets a fair amount of field use in sometimes harsh environments. I haven't used the D80, so I can't really comment on it.
Another source of many opinions you may want to check out is the Nikonian website. There are forums dedicated to both cameras there.jim pope

frankly either is excellent. Decide your budget first - you may find the D40X is just what you can afford because it leaves money for other buys.
Then try them out and go for the one that feels RIGHT.
I bought a D80 because the D200 is too heavy - tried one - and the D80 just for me handled better. You might just find the opposite.
CF is any better that SD. SD cards are very cheap so really that doesn't matter.
