Telephoto lens

I am looking for a good telephoto lens, something around 200 to 400 or 500mm, not only do I take wildlife pictures, but i like to take action shots, motocycle races and funny cars. So it has to be fairly fast......and last but not least-affordable.
I am using a Nikon D70

I'm afraid that 'fast' and 'good' equal big money.

I have a D-200 and a Sigma 28-300 zoom. It's not a very fast lens but it works for wildlife if you use a monopod or tripod. It would probably be good for drag racing as those take place in bright light. I've also used it on surfers using ISO 800 and had very good results.

The 70-300 VR Nikon lens may also work for you but I have no experience with the VR (vibration reduction) lenses.

I have both an Nikkor 18-200VR and the Nikkor 80-200 AF ED 2.8. I think the 80 -200 is faster and you can probably pick up an 80-200 used at KEH for a reasonable price. The AFS version is probably a little faster than mine. Optically, I think it's an incredible lens, superior to the 18-200VR and in low light (which sounds like not a problem for you) it's excellent. The downside- it's big and heavy..
