Need help with choosing a Nikon!

Hi, I happily used a 35mm Canon EOS 650 for years but I want to change over to a digital SLR (I already have a Canon Ixus 700 compact).

I only ever use my cameras on automatic and my main photographs are of my children (still and moving), landscapes and macro shots.

I wasn't keen on the feel of the Canon 350D and the lens supplied with it felt flimsy. I'm considering the Nikon D50 or D70/s, I would probably just go for the lens supplied with them as I am eternally lazy (hence I always use automatic mode!).

Any advice on which camera would give me closest to what I had with the Canon EOS 650?

Gwen, both are great cameras, but if you're a point and shoot type person, then the D50 has more than enough features for you and is lower priced. I looked at the D70 too - but figured 1/4000 of speed vs. 1/8000 was a feature I'd never use.

This shot was taken with my D50 - first week out of the box. It was on program mode and the only adjustment I'd played with to that point was exposure compensation.

(Note that everything on my website is posted at a low resolution for speed and to help prevent 'pirates'. All of them are top quality resolution when printed or viewed at their full sizes.)

Everything on this page of my Rocky Mountain gallery was taken with a D50 too so you can get great scenery shots as well.

I have also had photos of both my kids enlarged for my walls and even on the basic .jpg mode (as long as you have it set to maximum resolution - largest photo size), you still get wonderful enlargements.

The 18-55mm lens that comes with it is the one that took most of my scenery shots. Unfortunately it's in the shop right now and I'm nearly lost without it. Thank heavens for rentals!

So good luck, but from what you say you don't need to pay more for features you won't use.
