Nikon D70?
I've been getting really into photography lately, and have been asked to do a photoshoot for a magazine, coinicdentally when I was thinking about buying a new camera. Well, I think this is the time, and I have been keeping my eye on the Nikon D70. I have a friend that has one, and he swears by it, I wouldn't be surprised if he actually sleeps with it!
Anywhoo, before I purchase this, I want to make sure I'm getting the best bang for my buck. I'll probably be buying this off of ebay as a kit with some lenses, etc. Are there any other cameras (I know Canon has very similar ones) that I should consider looking at first? Thanks for the help!

Certainly, everyone that uses something other than a D70 will say "yes". I use a D70 and I still say "yes". For me, it was hard to consider something other than a Nikon, but, I did anyway to make sure I did not short change myself or have regrets later. I like the feel of the D70 and the functional buttons and the menus. All the little things that matter, work well with the D70 IMO. A friend of mine (very successful wedding photog.) swears by his Canon product. We respect each others choices but stick firmly to what we've chosen. Take the time to look at the Canon Rebel, and the *ist by Pentax, I hear good things about them. Good luck and happy shooting!!
P.S. be careful out there in Ebay "land" and don't get taken. If you're able to, check out the "for sale items" on nikonians.org too for some good deals.Lover of God & Fisher of Men for Christ

Re: Nikon D70?
If this is your first dSRL you should carefully think about the whole system in which you are going to buy.Originally posted by DigitalF

Cameras come and go, but lenses and accesories will stay with you for a long time, and switching brands can be very costly if you already accumulated a number of good lenses.
I am a Nikon photographer, even if my main camera is a Fuji S3 now, so I am biased to this brand.
Anyway, the Canon 350D is no match for the Nikon D70(s) from the handling and build quality point of view.
And I doubt that you will be able to see any notable difference from the 2 Mpx more on the Canon.
You would need at least a Canon 20D to match or exceed the Nikon D70(s), but then there is the Nikon D200
I suggest you buy the D70(s) in kit with the Nikon 18-70 AFS which is IMHO the best one lens kit for a Nikon digital.
You can have a look at www.radugrozescu.com/photo-tech/nikon-18-70-review.html to see my oppinion about it.
Good luck with your photography,Radu Grozescu

I respect the work and/or comments of both who have commented prior to me. That said, I bought the "original Digital Rebel" with 6.2 megapixels several years ago. In those days, this was the ONLY dSLR below a $1000, so decisions were easy. I justed noticed in my gallery that I am up to 7000 photos and still love my camera.
Key as noted by others is your selection plans for other lens. That said, you are not going to go wrong with Canon, Nikon or other top makers. I have a 70-300 image stabilized telephoto that provides stunning sports shots (ironically, I have never posted a sports shot on this site) and I also have a 100mm Macro that is a gorgeous chunk of glass. When I think of my equipment, I tend to think more of my lens and filters as most of the upper end bodies will leap-frog each other on a given year, but have similar strengths.
Looking forward to the output from whichever choice you make,

Well I ended up buying the D70. So far I like it, it will take some time to get to learn it. So far there is one thing I can't figure out. When I select the burst mode, I hold down the shutter release, but it only takes a single photo. Earlier I was doing it just fine, now it's not working for some reason. Any imput? Thanks.

Ok well all of the sudden the camera decided that it was ok to start using the burst setting again lol. Hopefully it will work from now on.
