5700 learning

Hey, Bud! So THIS is where you hang out! LOL! Good to see you too.

I was thinking of you this week. How is your area re: fires? I'm sitting here breathing smoky air with eyes burning and items at the door ready to be packed into the station wagon. Nothing imminent, but I am in a fire abatement area about 30 miles from the Chatsworth fire. We went through the Altadena fire 10 years ago, so we're ready for anything. Hope all is well there where you are.

It hasn't made it over the pass yet....I sold my cabin in Big Bear two weeks ago.....one of the reasons was fear of fire with all of the dead trees..

Here is a shot take three days ago...and then at night...taken about two blocks from my house.




I see where it is now in the forest in Lake Arrowhead........I flew over the area about one month ago and about 80% of the trees are dead from the Bark Beetle.....It's going to burn like crazy.

We should be safe here.....although in 1980 we had a brush fire that took out about 100 homes....I keep the area around my house pretty clean of brush.....

Bud, very smart and timely sale of your Big Bear cabin. Nice shots, too! I presume you took them with your 5700. Do you know if the cabin survived? Keep safe. I'll keep you in my thoughts. Hope not one ember goes over that ridge.

Thanks for the welcome, RVB, and for the comment on my pic. Fortunately, I can't see the catastrophic event from my driveway, either. If I start to see it, I'll be packing up and leaving right away.

I realize I got this thread off on a tangent, and I apologize for that, so I'll now turn it back to it's original purpose--discussing the pros and cons of the Nikon 5700.

I have had my CP5700 for almost a year now.
I love it for macro or portrait work. Sharp, crisp images ’‚’‚…‚’‚‚‚¦‚“
lovely portraits. But I feel like something is wrong with
ME or the camera when I take it out for landscape nature
photography. The images never have sharpness that
I see in other cameras' images. If someone has found
a secret to the 5700 to get a sharply focused landscape
image ’‚’‚…‚’‚‚‚¦‚“ pass it on. ’‚’‚…‚’‚‚‚¦‚“ Waynette

Beautiful portrait... and a handsome little guy too ! I like the concentration on the eyes with the use of blurring.

As for your landscape issues, I had the same problem with my Olympus E10, until I found it had a 'sweet spot'. An F-stop at around 5.6. Anything like F11 gave unsharp landscape photos.
BTW Close ups and portraits were fine as with yours.
I don't know if this applies for your Nikon though.
Another point do you use USM in PShop ?

but I have no clue what USM is...IS IT Unsharpen Mask?
If so ’‚’‚…‚’‚‚‚¦‚“ do use it a little ’‚’‚…‚’‚‚‚¦‚“ usually when I run an action
that starts saving slowly reducing the size of my images for
web postings. But yes ’‚’‚…‚’‚‚‚¦‚“ I do use it other times too ’‚’‚…‚’‚‚‚¦‚“ just not much.

Now you'll be ahead of the game when you step up to that Nikon DSLR! Not as much of a learning curve whereas the Point and Shoot cameras tend to leave people feeling like a Gimp who just lost his crutch!
