go check out http://www.dpreview.com
you can look at side by side technical comparison.
Look on the left under Buying guide, then side by side comparison
The D70 came out after the D100 with some slight but better modifications.
I do know that the D70 has faster shutter speed than the D100 from what a friend of mine who owns the D100 told me.
If I were you, I would buy the D70s
I have the D70.
Have been told that one of the differences between the D100 and the D70 was the D70 didnt have cable release. The NEW D70s now has that plus a 2inch LCD screen slightly larger than the D70.
You can see all the new updates to the D70s over at dpreviewLast edited by RTaylor; Apr 30th, 2005 at 08:58 AM.

Yes, I did dpreview and compared the specs and also photos, side-by-side. I was hoping for a comparison from someone who has owned both and have in fact talked to one such user. So far my observations are:
As you said, the D70 has some subtle technical advancements and a better LCD display.
If necessary to quickly capture and upload JPEG images with no time for post-processing, the D70 may have an edge in image quality.
The D100 is slightly larger, heavier, and said to be more robustly constructed. Ergonomically it might be better suited for someone like me who has large fingers and hands, as well as less-than-perfect vision. I also travel with my cameras and can't always handle them delicately. Finally I tend to shoot vertical a lot and would likely use some of the money saved by getting a good deal on a D100, to buy the optional battery grip with vertical shutter release.
The only thing everyone seems to agree on is that they are both very good camerass.

have you actually held the D70 in your hand? I shoot vertical at times as well and the right side of the camera had a great grip to it.
Every camera you should be careful with. So buying the D100 because you think its stronger wont make a difference in travelling convenience. There really isnt a DSLR out there that is covenient to pop into a small bag for travelling like someting like the Olympus C series which I also own. I used to carry the Oly on my neck when I was bike riding. Its not so easy with the D70 or any DSLR/SLR.
The D70 took over 40% of the complete market of all digital cameras bought in the past year, point and shoot included. That says a lot about it imo
