Should I wait to buy the Nikon D 70?
I just bought a 1BG microdrive and was planning on buying either one of the 8MP cameras or the Nikon D 70. Unfortunately, some expenses have come up and I was wondering what would be the advantages of waiting 6 months to a year to buy? For example, would the Nikon D 70 be significantly cheaper, or would a new camera come out that was significantly better for the same price? Basically, I don't know the rate of technological trickle down for digital cameras like these. Any replies would be great,.

I bought the Nikon 5700 last month and I now want the D70.
Thinking about it I could of bought it because I already bought $500 in accessories for the 5700.
But someone told me to wait because like all cameras it will go down, I waiting for a while for the 5700 to change in price.
So Im going to wait 6 months for the D70 to change in price.
I cant wait!

There is always something better
I am a D70 user, trying out this site for posting images.
I used to think the same way, but decided that the lost opportunity in picture making is too great. I've used film SLR for many years, was very excited when I bought my Canon G1. I was soon very disappointed because of the shutter lag. The D70 has a bit of a learning curve, but it is a FAST camera, and the images are great.
Good luck deciding.

Something better
You are a better person than I. You know of course by December, Nikon, Canon and everyone else will either have new products on the market or announcements. I will not be able to resist. In the meantime, take alot of pictures with your 5700.

nikon increaseing production of d70 to 20,000 a month
so there are two ways of looking at it - either the big increase will lower prices or the demand is so great that it will stay a while.
Nikon took a long time in bringing this camera to market so do not expect a replacement in the next couple of years and there will be no significient drop in price until a new model (either Nikon or a competitors) forces it. The canon Rebel sold at list price $999 until the D70 was announced and the price dropped to $699.
Expect the camera to sell for list at least until after christmas, then you will see a few dealers discounting their profit margins (wholesale is probbably around $950 for the kit) but I would not expect to see Nikon dropping prices until forced to by the competition. The first big price drops will be grey market cameras from asia but the supply is not sufficient for the grey market now.
I have seen a couple of dealers discount the D70 about 10% already but for that little I would prefer to buy from someone I knew.jerry

D70
I just purchased the D70 Aug 18th and love it so far.
It just takes some getting used to since my previous camera was the Oly C3030 then later the C750UZ
I was told the microdrives were very sensitive to being knocked and will cause you to lose data.
I purchased 2 1gig CF cards.
The lenses I purchased were the Nikor 18-70mm and the 70-300.
The 35mm equivalent to those are
28-105mm 105-450mm
I agree that the price wont go down until after Christmas if at all.
The D70 is a BIG item and many photographer friends of mine on other sites have all purchased the D70. Some places are out of stock because of the popularity, so I think Nikon will hold the price for a while.
The last couple images of mine in the POTW were from the D70Pbase.com/ReflectionsbyRuth

D70 vs CP8700
I bought a Coolpix 8700 in May. I bought a D70 in July. figured that the picture quality of the 8mp camera would be far superior to the 6.1mp camera. I was wrong!!! The D70, in a side by side comparison took equal quality pictures. In fact, the D70 has a faster focus time, a faster write to card time, and longer battery life. The CP 8700 has a brighter built in speed light. I'm not saying that the D70 is a better camera, but it does suit my needs a bit more than the CP 8700. I would recommend either.
Also, I owned a Canon Digital Rebel and a Sony DSC-F828. I don't too much care for canon but I got it at crackhead prices (VERY CHEAP!!!) The canon was bulky and felt cheaply made. It was very lightweight for the size. The sony, on the other hand was very compact but heavy. It's focus and write to card time was very slow too.
I love nikon cameras. I want to buy a D2x once my skills are good enough to justify the purchase, but I will never get rid of my D70. It's a powerehouse!!!

Yes you should!!!
The D70 is exactly what "Pro-sumer" cameras should be. I love my camera. Nikon is an excellent brand anyway. If you aspire to be anything above just a point and shoot photographer, a DSLR is what you want. In my opinion, the D70 is the best bet for the money. If you have lots of money, hold off for the D2x.

D70 or what ??
I tried a lot of cameras before buying one and I had to go with the D100 with the battery pack. The vertical release and being able to use aa batteries were in my favour. Also I'm not much into small things as my fingers are too big. I still use older F4's and F2's for slides as well but now that I have my D100 I use it most of the time. Pricewise I saved about $300.00 over the D70 and I think the D100 is built better.!Just my opinion.,,,,,,,,,,,,,RM

Handling jpegs better is probably a personal preference of the user based on his workflow. It may mean nothing to you. The D100 like all professional Dslrs takes photos a little flat with the intent to postprocess in photoshop. The comparisons are usually based on out of the camera results and really meaningless.
The issue of this thread gets more complex in that Nikon has seen fit to introduce two new cameras in this line in under one year.
The D70 has been replaced with the D70s, not a lot of upgrades but an almost exhaust proof battery is something special.
They also introduced the D50 as a little brother to the D70s.jerry
