Deleting photos from the site.
Hi Ruth & Steve - great job with the new site. I have a couple of questions relating to deleting photos from my gallery. I want to do some cleanup and I figured out how to delete one photo at a time, but am wondering if there's an easier way to delete multiple photos simultaneously?
Also I noticed if I delete a photo then I'm taken to another area in the site instead of going back to my gallery to carry on from there. Not a big deal but figured I'd point it out for things to be looked at sometime down the road!Suzan...

Hi Suzan,
As far as I could see within the many features of the new software, there is no way for a user to check off multiple photos to delete. I think I know what you mean when you say the system takes you elsewhere after deleting a photo. Does it take you to one of the older POTW archives where you had uploaded the photo?
These are both things that we ourselves can't change within the software but could pass along to the programmers of the company that wrote the software.Pbase.com/ReflectionsbyRuth

Thanks Ruth. Yes, it looks like it takes me to the photo contest archives.
No biggie. Just means I'll be cleaning up my gallery at the speed I'm cleaning up my house.

LOL, cleaning house? I haven't been doing as much of that lately with Steve and I trying to get Bytephoto back up and running under the new software and the holidays at the same time.
It used to bother me too that it jumped to the archives.
I think there is a new option that when uploading new photos you can place pictures into more than one category meaning your member gallery and also the contest at the same time. For now I only set it that users can choose up to 2 categories since I don't know if it just tags the photos in different categories or actually makes duplicates.
I'm going to check to see if when I upload to 2 different categories it might help to stop the jumping around. It might even allow people to comment on a photo in someones gallery and only see the comments in the gallery and not the photo contest and vice versa.
Will let you know what I find out.
The next photo you see me upload, make a comment on it and we will see what happens

I checked on an image I posted in both my member gallery and the weekly photo contest. The image in the weekly contest received a comment that does not show up under the same image in my member gallery. The image in my member gallery also received a comment which does not show up for that image in the weekly contest.
Under the old Bytephoto of course the image you posted to the weekly contest would automatically appear in your member gallery and the comments received in the contest would also automatically appear under that image in the member gallery. I liked that principle somehow. Maybe it's worth doing a poll to see what the general consensus is regarding this.

I noticed that too. I don't think that can be changed. Its a programming function of the software. We can only make changes in the software that the programmers allowed us to make via menu options. If we were able to make any other changes ourselves within the code and somehow it threw off the whole system, which is always possible, we will not have software support from either the vB or PP team to fix it. All software companies tell you that any changes you make within the code beyond any already supported plug ins you do at your own risk with no support.
I think there is a logical reason why that change was made in the new software. I'll try to find out the reason and let you know.
You can also delete a picture from your gallery and not lose all the comments on your picture if you also posted it to say the critique arePbase.com/ReflectionsbyRuth

That's fine Ruth. It's fine the way it is now and we'll just adapt and get used to it.

Wheres My Great Shots?
hey all I know I have not logged into BytePhoto for a while but was not amused when I logged in to find some of my best shots have been erased from my galleries, I understand the site has emerged to using a new format and maybe I am missing something but it seems I only have 2 shots left?

Hi Marc,
We are the new owners/admins since November 2009.
I have a backup of the users photos I had done around Summer of 2009.
I was able to search the pictures by your userid# since at the time, the system added your userid# in front of the actual file name.
I only found 2 photos belonging to you. Are you 100% sure you had more photos, or maybe confusing us with another website you could have uploaded?
I know I have my photos on other websites as well, some I have not been on for 4+ years and I would have no clue as to how many are on each website.
If that is not the case, then below is another explanation from my husband Steve I found in the forums that may help explain the process.
====================================
Our apologies for the missing photos. To keep a long story as short as possible ...
The original bytephoto.com server contract had expired prior to our purchasing and running the website and unfortunately, unknown to us until 'settlement' day, the entire website was dumped (erased).
Fortunately, two weeks prior to taking over, I had downloaded the entire site to see its structure, software and also decide what we were going to do. Since Ruth was only an 'Admin', I had to download the site using regular ftp protocol and it took over 2 days even at dsl speed. This was meant to be only a 'working' copy to inspect and although certainly not ideal and because the site on the server was erased, this copy became the primary backup.
The vast majority of the original website was preserved with the forum messages and gallery pictures. There were a few casualties though with missing or distorted pictures. If anyone should experience this, you are encouraged to re-upload any missing or distorted photos. Your understanding would be appreciated.

that is a pity, bytephoto was the only place that i uploaded my biggest and best shots, Im pretty sure i have them on disc somewhere in my backups, so i will upload them once i dig them out, I understand the problems you were having with the transfer of the site and sorry if i was a bit irate, i didnt know about it, and thought that admins had taken my shots down...
warm regards
Marc

Hi Marla,
I have the option for members to delete photo's turned off for now until I figure out a glitch in the system.
Just post a link on this thread and I will know to delete it.
Make sure to show a link like this, not a embedded picture
