What is the Best Upload Size?

Could someone suggest an optimal file size to upload? Is it typical to set it to 640 x __ ? I just uploaded my first picture, "Field of American Dreams". Would increasing the size improve the quality? Thanks for your help.

    Hi George

I tend to upload everything as close to 800 width x 600 height. When resizing the image I pick the longest size. If the longest size is the width then I set it to 800 and let the software adjust the height. As long as the height is 600 or below then I'm happy if it's more then I reduce the width a little more until the height is OK.

Likewise if the shot is portrait and the height is the longest then I set the height to 600 and let the software sort the width.

Resizing can often reduce sharpness and quality, so I usually apply an unsharp mask filter once more to correct for this.

When saving I try to keep the file size less than 200K by reducing the Jpeq quality if needed. That way you can get more pics in your gallery and they are not too time consuming for dial up users.

This is just how I do things but I'm sure other people have hundreds of different methods. I know many go for a larger size around 1200 x 800 so I suppose it's a matter of personal taste. It would be interesting to hear how others go about their uploads.

Hope this all makes sense, just let me know if you have any questions.

    Matt

I also tend to resize my photos down to 800 by 600 for uploading. At that size, I feel that I can make a decent quality image with a file that is not too large (around 100 to 400 KB).

While I have a 1472 kb internet connection, I realize that most people do not have that luxury. If I wanted to refer my family members to look at some of my pics, most of them still use 56 kb or slower connections.
