Worldwide digital camera shipments by Japanese makers surged 85 percent in October with Europe showing the biggest gain for an 11th consecutive month, an industry group said.
Canon Inc., Fuji Photo Film Co., Olympus Corp. and other makers increased shipments to 5.18 million units, from 2.8 million a year earlier, the Tokyo-based Camera and Imaging Products Association said in a report on its Web site. Sales rose 54 percent to 132 billion yen ($1.2 billion), from 85.8 billion yen.

Shipments of cameras bound for Europe more than doubled to 1.88 million units while shipments for North America jumped 79 percent to 1.89 million. Shipments in Japan rose 28 percent to 705,300 units, the group said.

For the January to October period, worldwide shipments rose 82 percent to 33.6 million units, with sales climbing 58 percent to 968 billion yen.

Global production of film-based cameras by Japanese makers fell 35 percent in October to 1.52 million units, the group said.

The association says its data cover about 80 percent of all digital camera sales and shipments globally
