First Photo Challenge launched
To get things rolling I've chosen the first challenge topic, "Natural Framing".
This means taking your shots where the main subject is naturally framed by its surroundings.
For this challenge, in B&W or/and colour, no intense photo manipulations are allowed, only the levels, brightness, contrast, curves, sharpening and noise removal, can be used.
2 photos per challenge, with the possiblity to replace the originally submitted photos with others, but they must be completely different from the initial entries.
Maximum dimensions 800 pixels wide at 1MB
Only comments, so there is no need to rate.
Freshly shot during challenge period.
Exif data must be included.
Keep your original files, the photographer must be able to produce the original photos if asked.
The challenge ends on March 21st and final entries must be in before midnight GMT+1
Post your entries to
with the challenge topic as the subject of the email, also include in the email your name and a title for the photo.
Hope I've not forgotten anything.
Kind Regards.

Natural Framing
This is very cool!
I know what you mean by natural framing and it should be obvious to those who don't already know but, you might want to post an image not as part of the challenge that illustrates the idea. this way any newbies or confused oldbies (I just made that up) can have an example. I think that it would be a good thing to make part of the challenge so that things are clear to all. except where interpretation is a big part like in "water" or "Dry" etc.Bracket, Bracket, Bracket!

Window frame
Forgive me for playing devil's advocate...but if I shoot a photo through a window as often occurs around old farm, houses etc, and include the window and frame............ would that not be considered a natural frame?
Thanks

Here's an example (not a great shot, though IMO
) where the subject (man) is framed by its surroundings.
Kind Regards.

Re: Window frame
Yes it could be OK, as the word natural isn't as in nature, but what is naturally found around the subject.Originally posted by parklawn

I suppose it's maybe badly worded...

Stephen,
Perhaps I've missed it and you've announced this new feature at Byte other than here in the Forum, but if not I'd like to suggest that you do.
I think many people who would be interested don't necessarily come in here and I think this is a good idea and deserves the best shot it can get.

"Natural" framing
I think what Stephan (RVB Pix) is trying to convey is an image which has within it some form which in turn frames or surrounds the subject of the photo. Sometimes this is called a frame within a frame style, a great way to bring more focus to your subject.
Bracket, Bracket, Bracket!

Newbie question
Hope I don't sound like too much of an idiot, but what all must be included in "Exif data must be included."
I mean, what if it was taken on auto, would it still be o.k. to send it in?

Exif
Hi Elsie
The exif data is a load of information that is stored with the image by the cmaera when you take the shot. Just about every digital camera stores it and I'm sure yours does as well. The problem is sometimes it can be lost with certain methods of post processing. I noticed in your gallery the first few pictures I looked at the data isn't showing. To know why that is we would need to know a little about the process you use to prepare an image for the web. Do you use Photoshop or Elements and use the "Save for the web" option. If so this does lose the exif info. If you use "Save as" a jpeg instead the exif should stay. This is probably one of the most common reasons for losing it but there are others.
If you look at a few of the pictures in my gallery and look just under the picture you will see the exif info there. It can be very useful for someone looking at your work as it lets them know many of the settings you used for taking the shot and yes shooting in "Auto" should still retain the exif.
Hope this helps, pm me if you need any more info
