Another new member

Have just joined and posted 12 photos in my gallery that have been taken by my Sony F717. I have had the good fortune of flyfishing the last 30 years in many parts of the world and making slide shows of these journeys for various fishing groups. But now it is digital and I am amazed how it has made an ordinary guy like me look real smart. As noted, most of my enthusiasm is directed towards scenic and land/sea scapes.

Hi whistlinb: Forgive me if this dupes a previous reply but I appreciate your comments. For the record, I did a bit of flying out of Horham in East Anglia 1943-44 and am wondering where Midlands might be in relation to Horham. Too bad I had only a cheap film camera then as there must have been some great photo opportunities. As to the outdoors, yes, a bit of that too in flyfishing many places-Norway, Scotland, New Zealand, Belize, Christmas Island, Bahamas, all over Montana and British Columbia. Now trying to capture some images that I find here in the Pacific Northwest area. As to the question, "You live around here 'old timer'?" I am quick to reply, "I'm tryin' to, Sonny!"

Hi steelfish, used to live in East Anglia before we emigrated to Canada in 1982. Don't know Horham though, we used to live at Leavenheath near the Essex border, U.S. bases all round us. What was the nearest big town to Horham?

When you were flying out of Horham in 1943-44 I was 12 years old and living with my parents in Kent, near Hornchurch (Fighter Drome). What did you work in, Flying Forts. perhaps? anyway mate, whatever you did....A BIG THANKYOU from me and my wife for all you did back in those dark days. Nice talkin' to you steelfish. Hi FR: I was flying Forts. Horham is close to a small village named Diss and midway between Norwich and Ipswitch. Whatever was done had to be done and the people surrounding us there were absolutlely wonderful. Went back there in 1988 and after 45 years spent a few days with them. They also were around 12 years old in 1943 and three couples showed us all around the countryside, had tea at some pubs and personally guided us back over to Cambridge where the big cemetery is. Believe me, there is a very warm spot in my heart for your countrymen. I had the good fortune to be representing my bomb group at an afternoon tea in Buckingham Palace and met the King and Queen, Princess Elizabeth and Margaret. Purty snazzy!!!! Hi Steelfish,

The Midlands is 150 miles or so from that bit of East Anglia, but I actually know it pretty well, as I grew up in Ipswich. In fact, my mother's family come from Wickham Skeith, which is a small village only a few miles from the airfield you're talking about. There's a memorial to you guys on the A143 road not far at all from there. It's a small world! It's very good to hear that you were well looked after on your trips to the UK- although it sounds like on your first trip it was you who was doing the looking after! I'd really like to echo Flyball Rebel's gratitude on that one.

Reading your posts it sounds like you've got around a bit- you've certainly been to some stunning places. Bet you've got some wonderful pics! I was lucky enough to get to New Zealand a couple of years ago, but unfortunately that was in my pre-digital days. Still, sometimes it's hard to take a bad picture in scenery like that. The picture you commented on in my gallery was taken in Scotland earlier this year, whilst the other 2 are from Wales and Cornwall. I'll have to make sure I take some shots in Suffolk next time I'm down there!

Hi Whistlin' Bob: Your comments and Flyball Rebel are so much appreciated. Although the primary aim of this site is digital photography, it is accomplishing wonders in making friends also in all directions across the the wide expanse of this world. What a great idea! Yes, my later trips produced some great slide shows and of course the flyfishing for those big browns on the South Island of New Zealand with the Southern Alps as background are treasures. That might be a good project scanning them??? Yeah, but! Oh, by the way, one evening in 1943 a family in Ipswitch invited a couple of us pilots for tea, along with a host of their friends, played parlor games, strong refreshments and had a great time that lasted into the wee hours. Another of the fine memories of your country. One more comment, the Memorial to the 95th Bomb Group is just outside the Anglican Church in Horham and this church celebrated its 1000th year Birthday in 1989! That ought to last a while also.
