For freeware, it's hard to beat Picasa which you can download and try (and use completely free) from picasa.google.com

I actually downloaded and bought Picajet over a year and a half ago.
All that it says it does is pretty impressive but last I checked it had lots of bugs to be worked out.
If I wwre you I would sign up for the forums on their website and see the types of problems people are having with the software before you purchase it.
I did hear Picassa was nice but last I tried that more than a year ago it didnt read RAW files for my Nikon. A raw viewer was a must in my book before I even would try something out.
That could have changed where it now accepts RAW/NEF files but I cant confirm a yes on that yetPbase.com/ReflectionsbyRuth

RAW data files, including cameras from Canon, Nikon, Kodak, Minolta and Pentax.
