    Talking New Camera Input

    Hi

I did a lot of shopping around for cameras today. Within my price range I basically am limited to the canon XS or nikon D60. Both of them feel about the same in my hand, although I do like the sound the D60 makes better when I shoot a picture, plus my friend has a Canon, so I like the idea of getting a Nikon just in spite! lol jk

These are of my body/lense options (I do want some zoom, I currently have an old S2IS with 12x optical which I use quite a bit).

I was wondering if anyone had any last minute thoughts, considering the body + lense combos and price.
    prices are in canadian dollars

    Thank you very much!!!

    Nikon D60 w/ AFS DX 18-55mm VR & AFS DX 55-200mm VR - $899

    Nikon D3000 w/ AFS DX 18-55mm VR & AFS DX 55-200mm VR - $930

    Canon XS w/ 18-55mm IS & 55-250mm IS - $899

    Canon XSi w/ 18-55mm IS & 55-250mm IS - $1099

welcome to Byte, thought I just made you active lol.
Did you check the comparison side by side on DPReview on both cameras?

Since I'm a Nikon owner, I checked the link for you between the D60 and D3000.
they seem pretty similar with a few updates on the D3000

    Hey,
Yeah I have checked out the dpreview info. All 4 of those cameras are pretty similar; a few differences, but no deal makers/breakers. I was hoping that when I held them in the store that one would just feel better in my hand, but as I said they both felt pretty similar.
So I guess it doesnt really matter with which one I get... I was just hoping that someone would tell me.. "you need to get this camera, whithout a doubt, because...." LOL
...Im not very good with choices.

As a Nikon D50 owner (10,000+ shots in 4 years), I'd definitely lean toward Nikon. Not sure if it still holds true, but the Nikon kit lenses were always better than the Canons.

As for your two Nikon options, the D60 was released Jan 2008, the D3000 in July 2009. I had a quick look at the comparison of features and there's nothing that leaps out that would make me grab one over the other. Personally, for the $30 difference I'd go with the D5000 because it's next generation technology. Features that were in the D60 are probably going to have been improved upon slightly. - e.g. autofocus.

Until May, all my landscape photos were taken with the kit 18-55 lens that came with the D50 and they were really good. The camera also handles my new pro lens equally as well so the quality is there if you want to upgrade later on down the line.
